Brace Yourself For the 'Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show'

Jerrod Carmichael is a risk-taker. In the last four years, the comedian debuted an intimate HBO special, made a stellar comedy called On the Count of Three, and even hosted the 2023 Golden Globes. After what we saw at the Globes just this past January, the gig isn't as easy at it looks. Neither is turning the having the camera on yourself, Truman Show-style—which is exactly what Carmichael will do in HBO's Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show.
Over the course of eight episodes, Carmichael will present his life as if it's an episode of Seinfeld. Confessional comedy sets will break up scenes from his daily life—only those moments are mostly unscripted. As one of Carmichael's friends says in the trailer, "This is not truth. This is narrative."
But Carmichael's conversations—especially the ones he has with his parents—are about issues he has with his family in real life. His last special, Rothaniel, revealed that his mother is a conservative Christian who cannot accept that he is gay. At the same time, he's coming to terms with the fact that his father had a second, secret family for decades. So, why continue to let us follow his life story? As Carmichael tells us in the trailer, "Cameras make me feel more comfortable."
How Do I Watch Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show?
Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show premieres Friday, March 29, on HBO at 11 p.m. ET. The eight-episode documentary series will release weekly from until the finale on May 10, 2024. Audiences can stream the series at the same time on Max.
The series is directed by Ari Katcher, who worked with Carmichael on On the Count of Three and co-created the hit Hulu comedy Ramy alongside Ramy Youssef. In the first episode of Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, Carmichael details his Globes hosting debut and introduces his unorthodox documentary style. As he teases in the trailer, "Being honest is cool until you have a reason to lie."
