The Biggest Fashion Trends for Spring 2023

Last October, during the waning days of the Spring 2023 fashion month, Thom Browne brought fashion enthusiasts back into the gilded days of the 19th-century France within Napoleon III's Opera Garnier. There, his troop of models theatrically walked down the runway in opera coats, crinoline silhouettes, and tons and tons of wide-brimmed hats. It was this moment that perhaps sums the spring 2023 fashion trends up best: glamour, and lots of it.

The spring trends forged from last fall point to a mutual desire to go big and to go bold--or at least feel that way to some extent. They ask one to, as they say on Tik Tok, "romanticize" their life in any and all aspects. Aside from the several nods to the crinoline skirt silhouette, houses such as Alexander McQueen sent down ensembles equipped with strong shoulders for moments when one desires to feel empowered. Valentino and Fendi emulated the draping technique synonymous with the dresses often depicted on the godly-women of greek mythology. Some designers, such as Ralph Lauren, pointed to the American Wild West and all the escapism to come within the rollings landscapes in the region.

But, some designers also made it clear that this desire for glamour doesn't always need manifest into some grand display. Luxury that is more of a whisper, not a shout, is still on the minds of many. For them, glamour isn't caked with gold, but instead found in the smaller details. And, according to some houses such as Miu Miu, glamour may be found in practicality. What's not luxurious about having several pockets available to hold onto your treasures?

The Revival of the Crinoline Silhouette

In the 19th century, crinoline, a structured petticoat, was used to widen women's skirts to and make waists appear smaller. Could it be that it's back? Alongside Thom Browne, Loewe, Gypsy Sport, and Jacquemus sent down a few of their own versions. How does one incorporate this dramatic silhouette into their own wardrobe? Easy. Heading to a wedding? What about a chic cocktail party uptown? The crinoline silhouette is sure to dazzle today just as it did more than 200 years ago.

Nothing evokes more sartorial empowerment than a strong, bold shoulder. The British love it (hence Alexander McQueen leading the trend) and, like the aforementioned trend, accentuates the waist. But, the British weren't the only ones to partake in this trend. Gucci showcased a plethora of jackets with a strong shoulder (a divergence from the usual Italian silhouette), and Schiaparelli, too. If you're in need to feeling both glamorous and powerful, find a blazer with a shoulder as such.

Glamour is found in ease and fashion houses understood this for 2023. Where else to find inspiration other than Greek goddesses who donned draped attire. At Valentino, Ferragamo, and Fendi, silk chiffon gowns billowed effortlessly down the runway and all the while, fantasies were conjured: spring trips to Italy, or perhaps running through the French countryside. Whatever and wherever it may be, it's time to invest in a garment which channels the romantic powers of Aphrodite herself.

Scoff at logos? Think peacocking is a thing for the nouveau? Or maybe you're just someone who is a bit of a quiet dresser to begin with. Well for those who may turn the cheek to loud fashion trends, fret not: designers are catering to you, too. Mary Kate and Ashley Olson are America's emblem for quiet luxury and this spring 2023 season. And alongside them, Matthieu Blazey at Bottega Veneta asks, why must glamour be a big deal? Can doing life's mundanities, such as going to the grocery store or running errands, be luxurious, too? This spring season, consider luxury in the every day.

There are not many places that offer an escape in the way that the American Wild West does. While certainly not as wild nor as barren as depicted in films in the last century, the terrain still evokes a sense of fantasy—especially to Ralph Lauren. But, it isn't just the American designer who is drawing attention out west. Burberry, in a seemingly novel move, sent full denim looks down the runway with some pants reminiscent of cowboy chaps. For the spring 2023 season, don't be afraid of incorporating some beaded suede jacket or even a pair of cowboy boots to your wardrobe.

While straying away from the frills of the aforementioned trends, several designers this season have their eyes on cargo because, hadn't you heard? Practicality is always luxurious. This season, pockets were a massive hit with designer houses as many pants featured not just one set of pockets, but two, sometimes three! Givenchy stocked up on pockets, and so did Miu Miu and Isabel Marant. Evidently, cargos are here to stay. At least, for the spring 2023 season.
