Tom Hiddleston took home a Golden Globe Sunday night for his role in The Night Manager. But his acceptance speech, well-intentioned as it was, received more than a few eye rolls in response.
Hiddleston took time during his speech to talk about his charity work in South Sudan. “I recently went to South Sudan, which is the youngest country in the world, in East Africa," he said. "With the United Nations Children’s Fund. I do a little bit of work with them to spread the word as fast as I can. It’s a terrible situation for children there. The Night Manager is about arms dealing, and there are far too many arms coming into South Sudan.” He went on to mention one time that he was having a meal, and workers with Doctors Without Borders came up to explain that they “binge-watched” The Night Manager.
Not all viewers were drawn in by his story, though. Many criticized him for sounding as though he was bragging rather than spreading awareness of a good cause.
Sometimes the discomfort was apparent in the audience:

And that sentiment was echoed on Twitter, with people feeling more or less uncomfortable with it all.
