Whether you're trying to revamp your backyard or starting from scratch, high-quality outdoor furniture is crucial. When browsing options, you'll have to ask yourself questions you wouldn't when furnishing other parts of your home: How does this sectional withstand the elements? Is this chair water-resistant? Will these cushions fade in the sun?

The More You Know

Wicker is a great choice if you’re looking for something that won’t fade in the sun. It’s known for its durability in the face of harsh weather, so you can rest assured that it won’t fade or lose its quality, both in its look and feel.

We asked interior decorator Liz Toombs for advice on curating the ideal outdoor furniture setup. "I like to have a mix of seating, such as sofas and chairs with side tables and dining tables and chairs," she says. "This allows the patio to be multifunctional when entertaining."

We tested lots of outdoor furniture — from modern sectionals to bistro tables to zero-gravity chairs — including a total of 21 pieces and sets to see how they held up to wind, rain, blazing sun, and, unintentionally (but perhaps most importantly), our pets. Each was evaluated based on setup, durability, quality, comfort, and overall value.

Best Value: Devoko Wicker Patio Conversation Set

$90 at Amazon.com

See at Walmart.com

Pros

  • Surprisingly supportive thanks to a slight curve in the back

  • Cushions don't absorb moisture

  • Glass top looks elegant and feels sturdy

Cons

  • Can't recline or put feet up; not conducive to lounging

Looking for chairs to add to your patio setup? Despite its low price tag, we were impressed by the quality of this three-piece set. Though they're not at all bulky, the chairs and table feel sturdy and well-made. The glass top on the table adds elegance and extra stability, especially for drinks. We also loved how supportive and comfortable the chairs felt, thanks to the slight curve on the backs. While wicker isn't known for being super comfortable, we could sit for a while without discomfort.

We experienced quite a few rainy days during testing. Still, the water-resistant cushions did their job, allowing most moisture to bead up and roll off the surface. This means you won't have to deal with soggy cushions, mold, or mildew if you forget to bring them inside ahead of a rainstorm.

The main con we encountered was that, although they're comfortable for wicker chairs, this isn't the kind of furniture you'll want to lounge in all day long. You can't recline, and the set doesn't include an ottoman.

Best Wood Sofa Set: Christopher Knight Home Carolina Acacia Outdoor Sofa Set

$393 at Amazon.com

$281 at Target.com

Pros

  • Resistant to condensation and moisture damage

  • Cushions repel heat, so skin doesn't get too hot

  • Highly durable

  • Easy to clean; stains release with wet paper towel

Cons

  • Light-colored cushions may show dirt more than darker hues

  • Small sofa only fits two people comfortably

If you like the look of wooden furniture but worry about its longevity outdoors, this one's for you. The Christopher Knight Carolina Set is crafted from acacia, a naturally water-resistant, weather-friendly wood. Plus, the frame material and lighter-colored cushions won't get too hot in direct sunlight (like metal).

While the backrests don't recline, the cushions are pillowy, comfortable, and supportive. All four pieces call for full assembly, and although you might want to recruit a buddy, the process was very straightforward.

Any staining (like bird droppings and paw prints) came out fairly easily with a wet paper towel during our tests. However, the light color will show dirt more than darker fabrics. The sofa is a bit small — it's more like a loveseat, fitting up to two people comfortably. Still, we found this set incredibly comfy for patio furniture.

Best Zero-Gravity Chair: Amazon Basics Textilene Outdoor Zero Gravity Chairs

$110 at Amazon.com

Pros

  • Feature-rich set: removable headrests, cupholders, side table

  • Natural recline for optimal comfort

  • Water-repellent textaline resists mold and moisture damage

  • Folds up for easy storage and transport

Cons

  • Recline lock doesn't stay well, particularly when changing positions

  • Cupholders may not hold all cup and bottle sizes

Looking for lounge chairs for sunbathing or your RV setup? This affordable, space-saving, zero-gravity set might be the way to go. We found the spacious chairs consistently comfortable, even after sitting for hours. Whether lounging with friends or laying out with a book and a drink, you'll love the added support of the removable headrests and built-in cupholders. Also, the thermoplastic-woven mesh material is breathable and water-resistant, so it doesn't get too hot or wet.

Though the chairs are comfy, we thought the adjustable recline setting could be better. It's supposed to be lockable, but if you change positions or make any sudden movements, it lifts you back to the upright position. Also, the cupholders don't fit larger cup sizes, but you can place other drinks on the included side table.

Best Wicker: Better Homes & Gardens Willow Sage All-Weather Wicker Outdoor Loveseat & Ottoman Set

$249 at Walmart.com

Pros

  • Ottoman allows for lounging and maximum comfort

  • Fade-resistant, water-repellent cushions stand up to elements

  • Compact size; ideal for apartment patios or smaller spaces

Cons

  • Light-colored cushions show dirt and require frequent cleaning

  • Small loveseat only fits two adults comfortably

Editor's Note: Better Homes & Gardens is owned by PEOPLE parent company, Dotdash Meredith.

Known for its durability, wicker is a common material for outdoor furniture and ideal if you want something low-maintenance and affordable that'll last many years. This Better Homes & Gardens loveseat and ottoman set won our vote because it's not only all those things but also very comfortable.

The light color of the cushions helps them stay cool in direct sunlight; plus, they're fade-resistant and water-repellent, holding up well on rainy days. The cushions are also nice and thick, so the rigid wicker won't press into your skin. One con about the light-colored cushions is that they show dirt easily. We cleaned the cushions quite a few times throughout the testing period, following the manufacturer's instructions, and all stains came out without too much effort.

Additionally, while the seat is comfortable, it is on the smaller side, fitting only two sitting adults or one person curled with their feet up. We think the set is ideal for furnishing a smaller outdoor space, like an apartment patio or balcony.

Best Bench: Grandin Road Amalfi Bench

See at Grandinroad.com

Pros

  • Remarkably supportive and comfortable for long periods

  • Comfortably seats three people or one person stretched out

  • Extremely durable with no signs of damage after a year of use

Cons

  • Backrest isn't very tall but still supportive

  • Seat cushion sold separately

Benches are a good addition to any patio or front porch setup. This one stands out for durability — we already owned it for more than a year ahead of testing and absolutely love it. It hasn't shown any signs of chipping, scratches, or molding with consistent exposure to the elements. It also provides a surprising amount of support, even though the backrest isn't very tall.

Aside from feeling well-made, it looks nice — the classic, preppy design has a high-end appeal. We also like how spacious it is, comfortably fitting two to three people.

The main downside to this bench is that it doesn't come with a seat cushion, but you can buy one separately from Grandin Road. It's fairly comfortable on its own, though we still recommend getting the cushion to make it as comfy as possible.

Best Investment: Article Calicut Loveseat Set

See at Article.com

Pros

  • Easy-to-clean cushions; spills and stains come out with minimal effort

  • Comfort and support up to par with indoor furniture

  • Durable, weather-ready design stands up to all outdoor conditions

Cons

  • Only two color options

  • Pricey, but cost reflects quality

When we say the Article Calicut Set is life-changing, we mean it. From the moment of delivery — a breeze, thanks to the company's white-glove service — we found everything about it high-quality.

The incredibly comfortable cushions offer generous support and don't get too hot or sticky in warm, humid weather. The frames are super durable, too — from cat claws to spilled wine to smog-filled air, they look just as good as the day they arrived. The cushions are easy to clean, as most messes can be wiped away with a wet cloth.

There are only two colors available, but both are versatile and stylish. Though it's on the pricier side, we think it's a good investment based on the overall quality. This is the kind of outdoor furniture that'll last years and years.

Best Rocking Chair: Kelly Clarkson Home Allison Outdoor Rocking Chair

$280 at Wayfair.com

Pros

  • Quick assembly; parts fit together nicely

  • Very comfortable for range of heights/body sizes

  • Smooth rocking mechanism

Cons

  • Teak wood requires maintenance and may fade to grayish hue

  • Strong wind may shift or knock chair

Assembling this rocking chair was a quick process — there were only a few pieces to attach, which fit together nicely. We had multiple adults sit in it, ranging from 5-foot-5 to 6-foot-11, and everyone found it extremely comfortable and supportive with a smooth rocking mechanism. The seat is deep and wide, and the back is plenty high to rest your head. We were even able to work on a laptop while sitting on it.

This outdoor rocker held up well in various weather conditions, though high winds might shift or knock it into something else when someone's not sitting on it. The teak wood feels sturdy and durable, but it may call for regular sanding and refinishing, and you can expect it to fade to a grayish hue over time. This chair is the ideal size, and the quality is readily apparent.

Best Bistro Set: Grand Patio Metal Outdoor Folding Bistro Set

$120 at Amazon.com

$133 at Homedepot.com

Pros

  • Easy to clean; holds up against extreme weather

  • No assembly required; folds for storage

  • Good height for eating and drinking coffee

Cons

  • Metal may get hot in direct sunlight

  • Seats aren't cushioned

This bistro set is perfect for an alfresco weekend breakfast, coffee break, or at-home happy hour. The table is actually a little bigger than we thought it would be and has an ideal height for eating and drinking. Even though they're not cushioned, the sturdy chairs are comfortable and supportive enough. The powder-coated steel is easy to wipe clean and holds up in extreme weather conditions. That said, the metal may get hot in direct sunlight, so consider placing it in a shaded area.

This set arrives in a large box, and each piece is already assembled, so all you have to do is unfold them. And you can easily fold them back up for storage. Though the design is pretty simple, this outdoor furniture exceeded our expectations.

Other Outdoor Furniture We Tried

  • Devoko 5-Piece Outdoor Sectional: While this set was priced well for the size and how many pieces you get, the cushions are fairly thin and don't add much comfort. Also, although they did initially repel water, they became soggy with continued rain exposure.

  • Noble House Mavis Outdoor Chaise Lounge Set: We appreciated the straightforward assembly process and how easy these rolling chaises are to move. But the cushions are a bit thin and not very comfortable, even for short periods; they also seem like they might blow away on a really windy day.

  • Tangkula 2-Piece Rocking Chair: These outdoor rockers are comfortable and cozy, though the cushions are pretty firm. The wood was unevenly stained, which made it look less high-quality. Assembly was simple enough, and they're a decent deal for solid acacia wood, especially if you get them on sale.

What to Know About Outdoor Furniture

Assembly

Most outdoor furniture will require some sort of setup. To avoid any frustration or delays in enjoying your outdoor space when your patio furniture arrives, look closely at the product description on the manufacturer’s website to see what exactly you’ll be working with when you open the box. Make sure that you have the proper tools and available space needed to assemble the furniture.

Comfort

If the outdoor furniture you purchase isn’t comfortable, you’re not going to want to sit on it. When curating your space, comfort should be the top priority. Looking at the product reviews on the manufacturer’s website and confirming the measurements you need is a great way to ensure that it will be comfortable for you, especially if you’re on the taller side. Also, look at the materials used to make the furniture — does it come with cushions? If so, how thick are they? How tall is the seat back? Does it recline? Does it come with an ottoman? Of course, your answers will depend on your needs and expectations for an outdoor space, but these are all good questions to ask when shopping for new outdoor furniture.

Durability

Shopping for outdoor furniture is completely different from shopping for something you’d keep in your home. You have to remember that this furniture will likely remain outside, exposed to the sun, snow, wind, and rain, depending on your climate. And if you have pets or small children, you'll want to look for extra-durable materials.

Look at the products the furniture is made with, whether or not the pieces are water resistant, and the color when considering outdoor furniture. If you keep it in a particularly sunny spot, it will be more prone to fading, so any dark fabrics may change color and vibrancy over time. Wicker is known for its durability, so a set like the Better Homes & Gardens Willow Sage Loveseat and Ottoman will likely last you a long time.

If you place your outdoor furniture under a tree, it will be exposed to more debris, like bird droppings and falling leaves or sap, so it must be cleaned more frequently. In that case, picking a set that's easy to clean, like the Christopher Knight Acacia Set, would be ideal.

Behind the Scenes

Our PEOPLE Tested team researched the most popular outdoor furniture and tested 21 options in a wide range of materials (metal, wood, and wicker) and styles (benches, sectionals, and loungers). We spent nearly 300 accumulated hours testing these products in varied environments and real-life settings across the U.S.

After exposing the furniture to rain, sun, wind, wildfire smoke, pets, children, and lots of guests, we noted how well the piece held up to real-life wear and tear and how easy it was to clean. We very closely simulated the use that you might face in your backyard so that we could give authentic and honest reviews on each product.

After the testing period, we rated each furniture piece and set from one to five — with one being the poorest and five being the best — for setup, comfort, durability, quality, appearance, and overall value. The top-scoring picks made this list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of outdoor furniture is the most weather-resistant?

We asked Toombs what material she recommends for outdoor furniture, and she said, “I love polywood and teak patio furniture. Both hold up very well in all of the elements and last longer than other materials.” However, the weather you’re preparing for will vary depending on the kind of climate you live in. For example, if you live somewhere with a lot of rain, ensuring the furniture you buy is water-treated is key. If you don't care for patio furniture with cushions, a durable Adirondack chair could be a great option for your space.

What outdoor furniture is best for high humidity?

Metal is prone to rust, which is the direct result of moisture, but powder-coated steel is designed to resist humidity and stay pristine all year long.
