TikTok beauty guru Mikayla Nogueira’s life has changed drastically over the last year: 'I just want to be real life'

Part of beauty influencer Mikayla Nogueira’s flair is that her videos are deliberately not polished or perfect.

“People don’t relate to scripted videos,” Nogueira told In The Know. “That’s not real life. I just want to be real life.”

Nogueira is known within the beauty community on both Instagram and TikTok for her tutorials and signature Boston accent. In one video, she explains that she’s going to do the “perfect look for going to Olive Garden.”

The 22-year-old now has millions of followers across her platforms who look to her advice and recommendations for products and looks, but when Nogueira was growing up she did not have the same kind of attention from her peers.

“I was not accepted in a lot of different ways,” she said. “Having a deeper voice, being really short … And makeup was a way for me to sort of escape from that.”

Similar to a lot of beauty influencers, Nogueira looks at makeup like art. Makeup can often be dismissed for being vain or superficial, but to Nogueira, it was a lifesaver.

“For much of my life, makeup was what I went to feel happy, to feel a sense of love,” she said.

Nogueira joined TikTok at the start of the pandemic and quickly joined in on the Catfish Challenge, which was trending at the time.

“Once I posted it, it just instantly went viral,” she said.

A lot of the comments that flooded Nogueira’s account had to do with her covering up her acne — a skincare journey she’s very open about on her pages. Her openness allowed her to connect with her followers on a deeper level.

“I knew people enjoyed watching me and that I had a following, but I didn’t know that the impact was that big,” she said.

The past year has been a whirlwind for Nogueira. At the 2020 American Influencer Awards, she was named the Emerging Makeup Artist of the Year. She now proudly displays the trophy in her room where she films her videos.

It’s especially surreal for Nogueira who re-discovered an Instagram Story she’d posted in 2017 about how she wanted to be a makeup artist one day.

“My goal is not only to keep myself inspired every day with my content but inspire others to be themselves and follow their dreams too,” Nogueira said.
