May 10—HIGH POINT — Singer and actor Fantasia Barrino is scheduled to return to her hometown next month for a ceremony honoring her accomplishments as a performer.

The 2004 "American Idol" contest winner will be the guest of honor during an event from 2 to 6 p.m. June 16 at Truist Point stadium downtown. The visit is part of the Juneteenth celebration organized by the Carl Chavis branch of the High Point YMCA.

Barrino isn't scheduled to sing and perform during the ceremony, said Carlvena Foster, executive director of the Chavis branch. The purpose of the event is to honor Barrino's career.

Attendance at the ceremony is free. For information about where to pick up free tickets call Chavis branch at 336-434-4000.

The event will feature a live band and local talent, food trucks and vendors.

Barrino has received acclaim for her recent performance in a musical remake of "The Color Purple." She received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy. The Golden Globe nomination is believed to be a first for a High Point native.

Barrino sang the national anthem at the College Football Playoff National Championship game played Jan. 8 in Houston.
