Avicii's Ex-Girlfriend Emily Goldberg Dead of a Pulmonary Embolism at 34 — 6 Years After the DJ's Suicide

Goldberg celebrated being "cancer free" on Instagram almost one year before her death of a pulmonary embolism.

Late EDM DJ and producer Avicii’s ex-girlfriend Emily Goldberg died on April 3 in La Jolla, California, at age 34, her obituary confirms. Her cause of death is said to be a pulmonary embolism — a life-threatening condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs have been blocked by a blood clot.

Goldberg was born on Dec. 3, 1989, in Poway, California. Prior to her death, she revealed that she had been battling cancer for much of 2022 and 2023, per her final Instagram post, although she also shared on May 24, 2023, “I am now cancer free 😷 🏥🩺⚕️🚑.”

The post included a Snapchat photo of herself seemingly laying in a hospital bed with the caption “I lived bitch” written across it.

Goldberg is survived by her parents, Julie and Sam Goldberg, and brother Aaron Goldberg. It’s unclear when she met her ex Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, but the pair dated for two years before the latter’s tragic death in April 2018. A tribute to the “Wake Me Up” producer posted shortly after he died remains on Goldberg’s Instagram page.

“‘Come on babe, don’t give up on us. Choose me, and I’ll show you love.’ Those are lyrics from a song Tim wrote for me,” she captioned the post. “I wish I could have lived up to them. For the two years we were together, he was my closest confidante, and my best friend. Now I can’t look at Bear without knowing I’ll never see his face again. I’m still collecting my thoughts and thank you for all your kind words and texts. Wake me up when it’s all over, because I don’t want it to be real 💔 #ripavicii #avicii @avicii.”

Avicii died by suicide while on vacation in Muscat, Oman, at the age of 28. At the time, his rep confirmed the news in a statement to PEOPLE that read, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman, this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th.”

“The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time,” it continued. “No further statements will be given.”

Two years before his death, Avicii announced his retirement from touring in a letter to fans on his website, which read, “We all reach a point in our lives and careers where we understand what matters the most to us. For me it’s creating music. That is what I live for, what I feel I was born to do. Last year I quit performing live, and many of you thought that was it. But the end of live never meant the end of Avicii or my music. Instead, I went back to the place where it all made sense — the studio.”

“The next stage will be all about my love of making music to you guys. It is the beginning of something new,” he concluded. “Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.”

In a 2013 interview with PEOPLE, the “Levels” hitmaker, who suffered from chronic health issues, shared how much his grueling tour schedule had affected his health, saying, “I’m tired, really tired.”

“I’ve been at it since I was 17, 18 years old … touring pretty much nonstop, 300 shows a year. It’s been very hectic,”  he added. “The [schedule] has been stripped down a lot for the upcoming couple of months and I’m not going to be doing that much, just doing some promos, a couple of shows, but no heavy touring. I need a break.”
