Any celebrity who dares to venture out dressed entirely in leather will almost immediately draw comparisons to the iconic leather costumes of 1999 sci-fi classic The Matrix. But Anne Hathaway and her inimitable red-carpet style aren’t so easy to fit in one box, as the actor so deftly proved with her latest public appearance in New York City.

Ahead of the release of her latest rom-com, The Idea of You, Hathaway attended a screening and Q&A session at 92NY on Sunday. For the event, she wore a three-piece black leather suit—complete with a fitted blazer, skinny pants, and a vest—which she paired with a smart white button-down, a black tie, and shiny black pointed-toe pumps. She also accessorized with dark oval sunglasses.

While the amount of black leather she wore still screamed The Matrix, the actor did subvert the trend with her styling. All together, the ensemble offers a more preppy take on the typically sleek and futuristic trend.

The Devil Wears Prada star is no stranger to pushing the envelope when it comes to the realm of fashion.

Hathaway made a statement in another leather number at Versace’s Milan Fashion Week show in February, where she sat front row wearing a cherry red leather midi dress with a corseted bodice, off-the-shoulder sleeve cuffs, and sculpted draping at the waist.

Her experimentation with fashion doesn’t end there. The actor has also played with the idea of the typical suit, showing up to a Good Morning America appearance last October dressed in a boxy half-denim and half-suit set designed by Dion Lee.
