We were holding out for some new spring style inspiration, and Anne Hathaway delivered.

As the actress took a break from talking about her soon-to-be-released movie, The Idea of You, and glamorously posing for a magazine cover, she used her downtime to watch the Atlanta Hawks play the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, March 23. And her basic black tank top, which she wore to the NBA game, is a breakout style for spring.

Tanks tops are already a trend in itself: Selena Gomez has posted multiple selfies in them, including one from just weeks ago, while Timothée Chalamet and Shawn Mendes both wore the arm-baring shirts last spring. While white tanks are stylish in their own right, black tank tops have a certain sophistication that their brighter counterparts lack. For the same reason we swap light denim and white linen pants for midnight blue washes and black slacks at night, something about the dark color of a black tank is just a bit more serious and impressive. Just think of how different Gabrielle Union’s outfit would have looked if she wore a white tank top with her blazer and trousers combo back in September.

Plus, black has a lower chance of being see-through, so finding a bra isn’t as much of a struggle. When the weather gets warm enough to sweat, it’s less obvious when your clothes start to stain. Plus, when temperatures drop, it’s an easy layerable starting point.
