American Idol continued its search for the next singing sensation with another night of performances critiqued by judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan but voted on by America.

Host Ryan Seacrest shared that the songs that the Top 10 would be performing were songs from their birth years—and they got help preparing from guest mentor Shania Twain.

Also, 2020 winner Just Sam, who won American Idol virtually because of the pandemic, took the stage for the first time singing “One Moment in Time” by Whitney Houston.

And 2011 winner Scotty McCreery performed his single “Cab in a Solo.”

Then America voted live for the Top 8.

Mia Matthews

Song: “No One Needs to Know” by Shania Twain

Luke said: “You met Shania, you’ve gotten rid of the guitar, and we’ve got you dancing around the stage. I love the commerciality you’re going to have. Now’ it’s you getting comfortable with different characters. I got Kelsea Ballerini vibes.”

Jack Blocker

Song: “Believe” by Cher

Lionel said: “I am just trying to get over the fact that when that song came out you were born. You are Mr. Magic man. You keep inventing yourself. Who the heck are you really? You have managed to carve out your sound. If you just don’t get too crazy, keep pushing yourself.”

Mckenna Faith Brienholt

Song: “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls

Katy said: “That was my absolute favorite. Music is a time machine. You just transported me into an incredible time. That’s magic.”

Kayko

Song: “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus

Luke said: “Who in the hell is this new person? This is two weeks in a row. At any point, a skateboard is going to come out and you will do tricks. Way to channel a new thing. If you spend your whole life doing one thing, that’s who you are, but if you keep people guessing, they’ll always want to know what you’re doing next.”
