'American Idol' Style: See Stylist Laury Smith Work Her Magic

American Idol is definitely going out in style. For the final season of the Fox singing competition, we’re handing over our Instagram account to some behind-the-scenes superstars, like the show’s stylist Laury Smith, who gave us a look at the contestants’ costumes before they hit the Idol stage.

If you think the Top 6 are quick change artists, think again. (OK, there is a quick change rack.) A lot of thought goes into each Idol outfit — hundreds of garments are pulled each week — and there’s lots of little details viewers aren’t usually privy to. Like the fact that guitar straps and shirts never clash (it’s no coincidence), and tight jeans get a test run to ensure there’s no wardrobe malfunctions on live TV.

Also, the contestants are really involved in picking out the perfect pieces, as we can see by La’Porscha Renae’s purple fabric, which she wore to raise awareness for domestic violence. Check out the Top 6’s finished product, and click through this slideshow to see all of Laury’s Idol snaps.

American Idol airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
