Amazon’s ‘Fallout’ Series Makes an Explosive Streaming Debut

It was not long ago that The New Yorker asked “can a video game be prestige TV?” The series that sparked that question, HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us,” answered with a resounding “yes.”

Following in the footsteps of “The Last of Us” is “Fallout,” Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the post-apocalyptic franchise that has resonated with gamers for nearly three decades. The series sits atop the streaming chart in the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of April 8 to April 14, thanks to a whopping 1.5 million households that watched the first episode in the first five days it was available.

While “Fallout” was number one, the runner-up this week “Shōgun” has proven itself to be a smash hit. FX/Hulu’s remake of the 1980 TV miniseries has never fallen out of the Top 3 spots on the streaming chart since its premiere in February. It will look to keep the streak alive as it nears its tenth and final episode on April 23.

Netflix is responsible for seven of the remaining eight entries on this week’s chart, beginning with “What Jennifer Did” at No. 3. The true-crime documentary examines the case of a young woman who hired a hitman to murder her parents.

At No. 4 is “The Bricklayer,” an espionage thriller that hit theaters in January and just made its way onto Netflix. It’s followed by last week’s No. 1, the 2021 crime thriller “The Little Things.” “Files of the Unexplained,” a docu-series looking at the strange, alien, and paranormal, lands at No. 6. “Unlocked: A Jail Experiment,” a reality series that debuted amid some controversy, lands at No. 7.

Netflix’s final two entries are among its most-heavily-marketed recent releases. “Ripley,” a neo-noir series, makes the chart for the first time since its release on April 4, landing at No. 9 this week. Closing out the list is “3 Body Problem” which has spent nearly a month on the charts, a good sign for a show that reportedly cost $20 million per episode.

Squished amid the Netflix block is “Wish,” at No. 8. Disney’s 2023 theatrical release was added to Disney+ on April 3 and like its predecessors “Elemental” and “The Little Mermaid,” “Wish” is finding a strong streaming audience.

Over on linear, singers stormed the chart. “The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden” left some viewers upset after technical difficulties, but it was still the No. 1 draw on the linear chart this week.

Lining up behind the Piano Man is the usual cast of musically-themed fare: “American Idol” holds two spots this week, No. 2 and No. 4, while “The Voice” sits at No. 3.

ABC’s coverage of the solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, was the fifth most-watched program of the week. “FBI” on CBS was the lone scripted program to crack this week’s Top 10, coming in at No. 6, while CBS’s perennial reality favorite “Survivor” comes in at No. 9. “Wheel of Fortune” claims three spots this week, at No. 7, No. 8 and No. 10.
