‘The Amazing Race’s’ Sunny and Bizzy ‘have a little PTSD from the word ‘plaza”

Sunny Pulver and Bizzy Smith avoided elimination time and time again on “The Amazing Race 36,” but their nine lives ran out in Wednesday’s episode. The firefighters got hopelessly lost Montevideo, Uruguay, multiple times and were sent packing.

“We’re really excited we’re dubbed the comeback kids and how strong we were on all of our tasks when we actually had something to do,” Sunny tells Gold Derby (watch above). “And we’re just gonna practice some navigation and get better at life.”

As the navigator, Bizzy admits she barely looks at maps in real life. In their day job, when a fire call comes in, they’re given the route to the address. They especially struggled locating the Plaza de la Fuente, where the Detour clue was. “I have a little PTSD from the word ‘plaza.’ It was rough, but we’re coming back for an all-stars season, so be prepared!” Bizzy jokes.

The language barrier was also a factor as they kept circling the plaza and asking for help. “We were in the area because it kept getting us closer and closer, but we probably passed this bistro that they called a ‘plaza’ maybe 25 times,” Sunny explains. “So we were in the area and the Spanish was kind of a deterrent. We couldn’t figure that out. They were like, ‘In the port? En la puerta?’ We were trying to figure what could this mean, how could this be interpreted? And we were right next to it the entire time.”

As they’ve usually done, Sunny and Bizzy breezed through the tasks as they involved two skills — welding and drums — with which they have experience. The duo made a habit of being really competent at difficult tasks but not easy ones, like their infamous riddle fiasco in Colombia.

“We locked ourselves into thinking it was a memory puzzle where you had to memorize these things and put them in the right order at a different location. So we started trying to memorize these things … as a story, so we started saying a story, and that’s what you guys story. This is them putting together a storyline to take somewhere else. Apparently it said in the clue what a rebus puzzle was, but we’d never heard of that,” Sunny says. “It was the funniest episode. Looking retrospectively, out of all the seasons I’ve watched, that was top two of my favorite episodes.”
