  • Alisan Porter has her hands full - but that's the way she likes it

  • The singer and actress will release her EP The Ride on June 21

  • She's also raising three children and just celebrate her wedding anniversary in a year she calls both "crazy" and "amazing"

Alisan Porter is living quite the life.

"I'm meeting with someone to remove a rat's nest from my garden and then I have to go downtown for a session and then I have to go to the middle school because we have a 'meet the teachers and parents' night," Porter, 42, hurriedly tells PEOPLE in a recent interview. "My son is going to be going to middle school, which I'm having a little bit of a crisis over. I can't believe it."

It's a disbelief that carries over to Porter’s longtime fans, as it’s a bit hard to believe that the little girl they first met on Star Search and in movies such as Curly Sue and Parenthood is now a fully grown woman married to the love of her life Justin de Vera and raising three children — Mason, Aria and Shilo.

"We've had a crazy year," says the accomplished singer/songwriter originally from Massachusetts of life in her household. "We have so much going on in our careers, from (dancer husband de Vera) being a ‘Ken’ at the 2024 Oscars to me releasing songs or working with my artists or whatever else we're doing. We've had an amazing year."

Indeed, the couple just celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary. "Our first year married and our seventh year together," beams Porter.

But while her personal life is nothing short of blissful, Porter’s new single "Bleedin'" tells quite a different story.

"It's the story of a divorce, but it doesn't necessarily mean a divorce from a marriage," says Porter of the “universal” song she wrote alongside Alisan Shoshana Bean, Kylie Rothfield and Stephan Hovsepian and a song that will be included on her EP The Ride, releasing on June 21.

"I feel like there have been a lot of these really grand edits in our personal lives in the past few years. Sometimes you just have to divorce yourself from a friendship or a situation that doesn't suit you, and it's super painful."

It's a pain that Porter says she remembers going through back when she was appearing on Season 10 of The Voice, while at the same time instinctively knowing that her then-marriage to Brian Autenrieth was slowly crumbling.

“That was sort of the beginning of the end of that marriage, but I think being on (The Voice) sort of led me to feel safe enough in my own skin to walk away,” she says as the winner of that season. "Now, I live around the corner from my ex-husband, and we raise kids together and it sort of has come full circle to the point where we make our co-parenting work and we are friends, which is lovely."

It's this arrangement that allows Porter to continue to follow her own dreams, and it’s those dreams that have always involved music in one way or another. "No matter what I'm doing in life, music will always stand in front," says Porter. "I hear people say, 'Oh, you should be so much further along in your career' but I have been given the greatest blessing, which is to be able to have my children with me, to be home, to be a mother, and then to be fully immersed in the entertainment world."

For Porter, this immersion includes a bevy of jobs, including coaching, producing, writing, performing and of course, singing, "I am fully a part of the art that I love so much," she says. "It is a balance. Do I wish that I was Beyoncé? Sometimes. But when I really think about my life and how beautiful my life is, I think that the universe laid everything out perfectly for me."

It's a blessing that Porter knows didn’t materialize for every child actor and singer, a fact further illuminated in the recent Netflix documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.

"Somehow I avoided a lot of the things that right now my peers are coming out and talking about,” says Porter, who currently has her eyes on dreams of getting a few more chickens and "maybe a goat or a cow" to her already chaotic life at home in Los Angeles. "I did get sober, and I was able to have a normal life. And so, right now, I feel extremely blessed to be in the position that I am in."
