Adam Scott Reveals Which Facial Hair Style His Family Hates, Even Though He Thinks It's 'Cool' (Exclusive)

Scott partnered with Philips Norelco and talked all things grooming — including how he originally learned to shave

Adam Scott is a man of many faces.

Facial hair styles, that is.

The Severance star, 51, has done everything from the clean-shaven look to a full beard, whether he's been sitting at home or starring in an Emmy-winning TV show, but he fully admits that when his character has low-maintenance facial hair, he's all for it.

"In Big Little Lies, I had a full beard," Scott tells PEOPLE of his character, Ed. "That was great, because I didn't have to do anything. I was also lucky on Parks and Rec that they let me keep my stubble for the entire run. I never had to shave my face, I just had to maintain."

In contrast to Ed Mackenzie on Big Little Lies and Ben Wyatt on Parks and Recreation, Scott's Severance character, Mark Scout, has a fully clean-shaven look that the actor considers, well, a little taxing.

"It's hard," he says of having to keep his face spotless to film every day. Fortunately for him (and his skin), he partnered with Philips Norelco, a brand he was already a fan of and used consistently in his everyday life.

"A few years ago, I had been working with a makeup artist who turned me onto the Philips Norelco OneBlade, because I like to keep a little bit of growth on my face, simply because I have a giant head," he tells PEOPLE. "Anything to break up the square footage, I found over the years, helps. It's easy to use, it's tiny. I travel with it. I use it every day."

Scott's Philips Norelco shavers keep him trimmed (or not trimmed) any way he likes it — and his actual preferred facial hair style is one that his wife, Naomi Scott, and teenage kids — Graham, 17, and Frankie, 15 — are not too keen on. But you know what? Scott's rocked it a few times over the years anyway.

"I do like a mustache," he admits. "I like having a mustache, and my daughter and my wife hate it. Whenever I do have one, they immediately are just like, 'No, no, turn around, go back and get rid of it right now.' So it usually only lasts a few days, but I do like the way a mustache looks — I think it's cool. I don't think my son really notices. He might say I look stupid, but other than that, he's fine."

Scott says teaching his own son to shave was quite the different experience from how he learned to shave (and admits it was "so weird" when his firstborn started shaving!). In his commercial for Philips Norelco, he dishes out his very real story of how he learned to shave as a preteen: using his mom's razor and picking up tips from TV and movies.

"My dad had a beard — still has a beard — so there wasn't a lot of shaving in the house," he says. "I would get it all from movies. It was usually a cop or someone shaving in a cracked mirror. It was also later on when I was a teenager, James Spader, shaving in the gas station in Sex, Lies and Videotape, just the coolest shaving I've ever seen. I haven't yet found the right gas station to give it a shot in real life, but that's one of my favorites."
