Actresses from 'The Handmaid's Tale' reflect on how the show has empowered women: 'It's a phenomenal thing'

The Handmaid’s Tale may be one of the best shows on television because of the way it brings the dystopia of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel to life. However, many also feel the series is an amazing reflection of society offscreen.

While discussing how women across the country have worn the infamous red robes that the handmaids wear in the TV series as their own form of protest at the Women’s March and at Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court hearings, actresses from the show tell Yahoo Entertainment that the impact is all they had hoped for.

“It’s a deeply gratifying thing that women protest wearing that red dress. It says so much,” Ann Dowd explains. “That in fact it had enough meaning to them to take it out of their living room and onto the street, I think it’s a phenomenal thing.”
