8 things to do in Anchorage this weekend
Mar. 28—As spring approaches in full, there are plenty of things happening in Anchorage: a travel showcase, an abundance of musical options and even the debut of a play. Here's look at some highlights.
Anchorage Transportation Fair
3-7 p.m. Thursday; Alaska Airlines Center Auxiliary Gym, 3550 Providence Dr.
This is an opportunity to learn about road, rail, pedestrian, air and safety projects being planned and designed in Anchorage. Bus routes 10, 20 and 55 make stops at the venue and there will be free snacks while they last.
Empty Bowl Project
5:30 p.m. Thursday; Bean's Cafe Kitchen and Warehouse, 1524 Ship Ave.
Now in its 30th year, this fundraiser will take place at Bean's new kitchen and warehouse. The event includes appetizers and dinner prepared in-house, sweets from Motley Crew Bakery and music from DJ John Fernandez. There will also be a silent auction. Tickets are $100.
Shain Shapiro: This Must Be the Place
6 p.m. Thursday; The Writer's Block Bookstore & Cafe, 3956 Spenard Rd.
Shain Shapiro's new book, "This Must Be the Place," investigates how music makes your city better. He'll be joined in a panel discussion by DJ Spencer Lee, Ray Flores and Sara Jean Larsson Greenbeerg. Music by Matt Hopper and the Pipeline Vocal Project.
Alaska Summer Showcase
Noon Saturday; Dena'ina Convention Center, 600 W 7th Ave.
As summer approaches, this is the spot to learn about all the travel possibilities, both in-state and Outside. Todd Grebe & Cold Country provides the music while there are $25,000 in travel prizes available. Tickets are $10 and $15 at the door.
Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime
6:30 p.m. Saturday; Williwaw Social, 609 F St.
Badfish, a Sublime tribute band, makes a stop in Anchorage on its "High With You Tour." Local openers H3 kick off the show at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.
Winter Concert
7:30 p.m. Saturday; Sydney Laurence Theatre, 621 West 6th Ave.
The Anchorage Civc Orchestra presents its winter concert featuring concerto competition winner Rania White and runner-up Olivia Martin. Musical selections from Mozart, Rachmaninoff and Mendelssohn will be performed. Tickets start at $23.50.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
7:30 p.m. Saturday; Atwood Concert Hall, 621 West 6th Ave.
Dubbed by Nelson Mandela as "South Africa's cultural ambassadors to the world," the group has toured for more than 60 years and earned five Grammy awards. Tickets start at $44.
Blackout
7 p.m. Friday/Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday; Cyrano's Theatre Building, 3800 DeBarr Rd.
Written and performed by award-winning playwright Cooper Bates, this follow-up to "Black When I Was a Boy, Part I" "brings multicultural characterizations through an honest and even humorous look at a complex and powerful coming of age story." Tickets are $30 or $27 for military, students and seniors.
