2024 Tony Awards: The Complete List of African American Nominees

Ahhh, the Tonys! The award show where some of the biggest and brightest names—and some soon to be big names come together to lend their talents to an art form that doesn’t always get its just dues.

But because we love to celebrate Blackness in all of it’s many facets and with the 2024 nominations being revealed on Tuesday, we felt it fitting to celebrate our brothers, sisters and projects who received some well-deserved recognition.

The 2024 Tony Awards, hosted by Ariana DeBose, will air LIVE on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 8p.m. ET on the CBS and streaming live and on demand on Paramount+.

For those not versed in the world of the Great White Way, the Alicia Key’s created musical “Hell’s Kitchen” is up for Best Book of a Musical—which is essentially like best script, if you will.

For their roles in “Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch” and “Uncle Vanya,” respectively, Leslie Odom Jr. and William Jackson Harper are both up for Best Performance By an Actor in a Lead Role in a Play.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role in a Musical: Dorian Harewood

For his role in “The Notebook,” Dorian Harewood is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role in a Musical.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role in a Musical: Maleah Joi Moon

For her role in “Hell’s Kitchen,” Maleah Joi Moon is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role in a Musical.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play: Kara Young

For her role in “Purlie Victorious,” Kara Young is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical: Brandon Victor Dixon

For his role in “Hell’s Kitchen,” Brandon Victor Dixon is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.

For their directing in “Purlie Victorious” and “Jaja’s African Hair-Braiding,” respectively, Kenny Leon and Whitney White are up for Best Direction of a Play.

Best Choreography: Camille A. Brown

For her choreography in “Hell’s Kitchen,” Camille A. Brown is up for Best Chorepgraphy.

Best Play: Jaja’s African Hair-Braiding

“Jaja’s African Hair-Braiding,” directed by Whitney White is nominated for Best Play as well as: Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound Design.

Best Musical: Hell’s Kitchen

Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen” is up for Best Musical along with: Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Direction, and Best Orchestrations.

Best Revival of a Play: Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch

“Purlie Victorious” is nominated for Best Revival of a Play as well as: Best Scenic Design of a Play and Best Costume Design of a Play.
