In an amazing oral history of the iconic Mac shade Ruby Woo, Fashionista casually shared an interesting (and unexpected) fact in text.
In the piece, journalist Souzan Micheal writes, “Decades later, Ruby Woo hasn’t been tweaked since its release. It remains MAC’s best-selling shade in the U.S., and the brand’s second-best-selling shade globally (Chilli currently holds the top spot), with seven tubes of Ruby Woo selling around the world every minute.”
While it isn’t revealed how many tubes of Chili are sold worldwide every minute, one can assume it is more than seven. And that is absolutely bonkers — especially since it’s not a shade you often hear about.

But the popularity actually makes sense when looking at things through a global lens. Chilli is a matte lipstick, and is described as a brownish orange-red. It’s a copper-like hue that seems to be most popular among people with medium to deep skin tones, which is perhaps why it’s so overlooked in a white-centric U.S. beauty industry and community.
