10 Anime Series to Watch This Spring

It’s already been a good 2024 for anime. Most notably, you have “The Boy and the Heron” winning Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, making for the first anime film to win the prize since another Hayao Miyazaki classic, “Spirited Away,” did so back in 2002. But outside of that big accomplishment, the year has also birthed a ton of great shows already, with a strong winter 2024 season that included great new shows like “Delicious in Dungeon,” “Bucchigiri,” and “Sengoku Youko.”

If Winter 2024 was a great start, Spring 2024 promises to be even more packed. That’s mainly because two of the biggest series currently ongoing are debuting their new seasons this April, the type of blockbuster series even non-anime fans might have heard of. Premiering its seventh season and 139th episode, “My Hero Academia” — an action series about the exploits of students at an academy for superheroes — will release on Crunchyroll beginning May 4. Later that month on May 12, the fourth season of “Demon Slayer,” the ultra-popular anime about a young man in feudal Japan who becomes a demon hunter to avenge his family, will premiere its first episode.

“My Hero Academia” and “Demon Slayer” alone promise a lot of attention, but they’re not the only known quantities returning this Spring. There’s also acclaimed comedy series “KonoSuba,” appropriately titled-comfort watch “Laid-Back Camp,” fantasy adventure “Mushoku Tensei,” and “Black Butler,” which returns to television for a new season after over a decade. That’s on top of shows like “Spice and Wolf” and “Bartender,” remakes of series that premiered back in the aughts.

With this many already-popular franchises, it can be difficult for a new series to break through. But hopefully, some will, and there’s already at least one very hyped new series in the form of “Kaiju No. 8,” a manga sci-fi series about battling giant monsters that’ll hopefully scratch the itch recently converted “Godzilla” fans might be having. Add on promising manga adaptations like “Go! Go! Loser Ranger” and interesting originals like “Astro Note,” and there’s something for pretty much any fan this season.
