Parents Found Dead After Child Can't Wake Them Up
A 7-year-old girl in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, woke up Monday morning, got herself ready for school, and got onto the bus by herself. After a full day at school, she mentioned to her bus driver on the way home that she couldn’t wake her parents up. Police investigated and found her parents dead, and three younger siblings still in the house, according to the Washington Post.
CBS Pittsburgh reports that Christopher Dilly, 26, and Jessica Lally, 25, were found dead Monday evening in their home. Police suspect the two died of a drug overdose. It’s unclear how long the couple had been dead, though police suspect they may have been dead for a day or even two days.
Lally’s sister, Courtney, said they were addicted to heroin. "My sister wasn’t the person she became when it came to drugs," Courtney told WXPI. "She wasn’t the person I knew. It was like the drugs had taken over." Courtney had tried desperately to save Jessica’s children, even sending photos of deplorable conditions of their trash-strewn home when they lived in a nearby town to police. When she did that, Jessica and Christopher got so mad they moved to another town. Courtney now worries that if she hadn’t used that technique, they may have been alive today.
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, like many parts of the United States, has grappled with an opioid epidemic lately. This was the second heroin overdose to occur on their block Monday. "It’s getting ridiculous. This is three bodies in one day," neighbor Jordan McCallister told WTAE.
The 7-year-old and her siblings, a 5- and 3-year-old and 9-month old, were evaluated at a hospital and will be placed in the care of Allegheny County Children Youth and Families. Courtney is attempting to gain custody of the three kids. Kristin Davis, a spokesperson for the McKeesport Area School District, released the following statement:
Our district took immediate action after we were notified of the concerns shared by one of our students on their route home. We alerted all appropriate officials and ensured the student’s safety. Each school in our district offers counseling to any student who needs it and we will be available to the family affected by this tragedy.
