Zendaya’s Hair is Always Under Scrutiny
Zendaya is a former Disney star and a very talented 18-year-old actress and singer, but unfortunately she’s been dealing with too much attention placed on her looks, specifically her hair. When she wore dreadlocks to the Oscars, Giuliana Rancic commented on her appearance: “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil … or maybe weed.” Zendaya went viral for responding to Rancic’s comment on Twitter with a thoughtful, well-written essay: “ “There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair. My wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”
Most recently, she sported a short pixie cut, that was actually a wig, to the 2015 BET Awards leading to more critical comments about her choice of hair. “When people don’t like your hair but they tweetin bout you tho….. #idgaf #idgaf,” she Tweeted in response, accompanied by two goofy photos. It’s mark of confidence and self respect that she responded in the way that she did. Despite her young age, Zendaya already seems to understand that who she is, what she stands for, and what she has to say is what really matters.
