Zendaya Calls Out Magazine for Slimming Her Thighs and Torso

Zendaya’s landed another magazine cover — but she’s not entirely happy about it. On Tuesday night, she lambasted Modeliste, an independent print and digital fashion magazine, for slimming down her legs and torso. “Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated,” she commented on Instagram, sharing the retouched and unretouched images side by side. “These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it.”

The editors at Modeliste were quick on their feet and swiftly pulled down the retouched images, though. “Thank you @modelistemagazine for pulling down the images and fixing this retouch issue,” Zendaya added to the original Instagram post later.

Zendaya’s had a viral and outspoken year, especially in the realm of beauty. She landed the February 2015 cover of Teen Vogue, in which the teenybopper fashion bible perceptively crowned 2015 the “Year of Zendaya.” In February 2015, she called out E!’s Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic for the “outrageously offensive” remark on the Oscars red carpet: “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed. Maybe weed?” Zendaya promptly responded on Twitter: “There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair. My wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough.”

Zendaya also celebrated #BlackOutDay in March 2015 by posting a photo with her natural hair on Instagram and graduated high school (with an enviable and not at all gawky senior portrait) in May. Recently, she also debuted five daring beauty looks in collaboration with Mane Addicts.

The message the media should be hearing? Don’t pull a fast one on Zendaya — she may have just graduated high school, but she’s got beauty and brains.

Update: Modeliste editor in chief Amy McCabe responded that she will be pulling the not-yet-released issue: “Upon review of the final edited images which had been submitted to us by an independent editing company, together, as a collaboration between myself, Zendaya and her parents, we concluded that the images had been retouched to an extent that was not acceptable and not true to the values and ideals we represent and promote in our publication. I, therefore, made the executive decision to immediately pull the issue in order to have this rectified and have the images restored to their original, natural state which will reflect the true beauty and radiance of Zendaya.”
