Your 2015 Ultimate Summer Bucket List

The 10 things to see, try and do while the warmer weather’s around. (Photo: Steven Brahms)

After a long, dreary winter (what, you weren’t in grey New York City like us?), we’re ready to put on our cutest shorts (or maybe swimsuit) and enjoy everything the great outdoors has to offer now that the weather’s warm. We’ve got a bevvy of things to do, eat and see no matter where you live—or where you’re going. Use our checklist as your unofficial guide for the next three months—print it out, keep it with you and get it all done. By the time Labor Day rolls around, you won’t believe all that you’ve accomplished—not to mention the ideas you’ll have floating around your head for Summer 2016.

1. Pack a Ridiculously Good Picnic
Yes, sandwiches and chips are great, but there’s no reason you can’t curate a full menu. Think outside of the picnic box (sorry, had to) and try something thematic, like an Italian spread complete with prosciutto, mozzarella and of course,  red wine, or maybe go for one of these recipes—they’re all packable and under 300 cals per serving.

2. Throw a Party
Got a backyard? Roof deck? Then you’ve got a party spot. No outdoor space? Open all the windows and string a few lights around your apartment for a festive vibe (and a nice breeze). Use the season as an excuse to get a little bit dressed up (maybe show off a little skin?) and to, of course, let loose a little, as well.

3. Take That Day Trip
Sure you’ve got a whole week booked at the beach, but what about the rest of the summer? Take advantage of all that’s around you and finally do that day trip to the beach, lake or swimming hole that’s been on your to-do list forever—or maybe somewhere you haven’t visited in a bit. Either way, get your bathing suit cleaned, packed and ready to go—it’s time to hit the water.

4. See an Outdoor Concert
Cities and towns are filled with live acts all summer long—in fact, you may find that these have already started. From pop to rap to country and back, there’s definitely a band, singer or group playing tunes you won’t want to miss. Odds are that the performance will be free—most outdoor summer concert and film series tend to be—or pay a nominal fee at best. (We’re talking like $5, ladies.) Bonus points if you bring that picnic with you (see #1).

5. Take Your Workout Outside
This is not the time to go to the gym. With clear skies and comfortable temps, the weather is borderline begging you to get out of the house with a new (or favorite!) activity. A few that come to mind include a softball game (co-ed league, anyone?) or swimming, but you can also fall back on tried and true routines like this park-bench calorie torcher, some lakeside yoga or a trail run. Nowhere to start? Take our quiz to find your perfect new summer sport.

6. Catch a Beachside Sunrise AND Sunset
The beach is our second home for many reasons, but perhaps most so for the killer views. Make sure to catch a sunset while cuddling up under a blanket—but then make it your business to also wake up early for a sunrise. Both are incredibly satisfying to the soul—and incredibly beautiful, too.

7. Get More Vitamin D
Spend as much time as you can outside (with proper SPF protection, of course!)—even if it’s just a two-minute walk, which has been shown to negate the effects of sitting, in the sunshine.

8. Have a Micro-Adventure
Forget Great Adventure. (Besides, who likes those lines and those rides?) Instead, have a micro-adventure. We’re talking don’t-leave-your-hood type of adventure. Discover something brand-new about your neighborhood and explore it—think a hidden nook in the park, an under-the-radar coffee shop and more.

9. Tackle That Reading List
It’s time to read a book. Not on your iPad, not on your smartphone, but a real-life book. Need inspiration? Check out what top celebs are reading (we’re inclined to recommend Sofia Vergara’s current pick)—and SELF staffers—like our former colleague’s amazing debut novel, Luckiest Girl Alive.

10. Make Some Ooey, Gooey S'mores
Nothing says summer like this campfire dessert. Whether you choose the traditional fillings or something unique (Nutella…thoughts?!), they’re the indulgent outdoor dessert everyone needs.
