Women Are Going to Sephora to Do Their Makeup—But Not Buying Anything

We love testing beauty products just as much as anyone (which is good, since it’s kind of our job), but this group of women just beat out every single beauty guru at the product-sampling game.

As the Wall Street Journal reported today, there’s sort of a not-so-secret “makeup moocher” cult—women who visit stores like Sephora and Ulta to use their testers with no real plan of purchasing anything.

Some go to “freshen up,” others treat it like “an extension of their own bathrooms.” According to the report, some women even bring their own makeup brushes and others give themselves full-on manicures, "with two coats and a top coat if it’s available."

One woman, the article reports, actually goes there to do mini-makeovers on friends:

Dymin Hayes, 23, doesn’t just use testers for herself—she goes to the stores to apply makeup on friends. She recently performed a full-face makeover at the Ulta store in Carbondale, Ill. The regimen included Becca foundation, Laura Geller highlighter and Anastasia Beverly Hills eyebrow enhancers. If purchased individually, the products would have cost more than $100. Store salespeople didn’t seem to mind, she says. “They’re not in your face.”

Of course, it's kind of tough for the stores to discourage testing, but the article did mention that both retailers said “they train employees to let customers do as they please—so long as it isn’t too gross.”
