This Woman Dyed Her Waist-Length Hair Rainbow in Just 4 Hours

Winnipeg, Canada-based hair stylist Kelly O'Leary-Woodford turned someone's waist-length hair into a rainbow hair confection.

What happens when you take two of the craziest hair trends of the moment? You get waist-length rainbow hair of Instagrammable proportions. Winnipeg, Canada-based hair stylist Kelly O'Leary-Woodford recently transformed one of her clients into the star of a Lisa Frank remake of Rapunzel. (That's not a thing, but it totally should be.)

Surprisingly, the coloring process only took four hours. After speaking with colorist Sophia Hilton of Not Another Salon recently, I learned that hair transformation like this often take up a whole day and might need multiple sessions, and quick Instagram videos can be incredibly deceiving. O'Leary-Woodford is a speedy one, though. (She owes it to having accomplished a lot of these kinds of transformations.) Over those four hours, she painted on a total of 10 different shades of hair dye. For some of that time, she says she had to sit on the floor to really get those ends. All the while, at least 100 people were watching her do her thing. The rainbow hair transformation was a part of an event in Rockville, Maryland. Eight hair stylists came together to create and collaborate with each other in front of an audience. You can see the process in action in the video below.

Luckily, O'Leary-Woodford had prior experience with dying waist-length hair. But "it is always a challenge," she says. "It's very satisfying when it is done because you really worked for it! I was exhausted when it was done." One of the biggest challenges she faced was making sure she evenly coated all of her client's hair. "You just want to make sure it is all saturated," she explains. "It's easy to get overwhelmed with all this hair and rush through it." So if you have hair this long and plan to add some rainbow hues to it, she suggests bringing lunch with you. You're going to become very well-acquainted with the salon chair.
