Why Larry David Won the Tonys Red Carpet

Larry David has made nearly $1 billion using his own so-funny-you-can’t-make-it-up experiences to create “Seinfeld” and HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” On “Curb,” David played a fictional version of himself and he became an unexpected Broadway success in “The Producers.” This year, life imitated art as David created and starred in “Fish in the Dark” on Broadway. He recently completed his run, and Jason Alexander (who played George Costanza on “Seinfeld”) now fills his leading role.
There’s one thing both fictional and real Larry David have in common: They refuse to play by the rules and adhere to societal conventions they find gratuitous. The setting doesn’t matter: A funeral, a gallery opening, the Tony Awards: All are fair game for hijinks if you’re LD.

So naturally, David couldn’t take himself seriously at tonight’s red carpet ceremony. He traded his usual Simple sneakers for what look like fancy tennis shoes. And his primping was not kept underwraps in the car or dressing room. He made a big show of squirting breath freshener into his mouth in front of the cameras.
In a world where most stars keep up appearances and present an artificial version of themselves for the public, David’s authenticity — and ability to not only make others laugh but to laugh at himself — is very much appreciated.
