What Are You Thankful For?

It’s been a big year for team Yahoo Beauty. We launched the site in June and have watched it blossom, OK, boom, into a rich hub of empowering content. Collectively, we’re thankful for your support, engagement, and feedback. Individually, well, we’re bursting at the seams with thanks. Our editors sound off, below.

Joanna Douglas, Senior Editor

Life: I’m thankful for my independence! I suffered a bad ankle break in February.  Surgery and a couple of weeks stuck in my 5th floor walk-up apartment was just the start of a long recovery process. I greatly appreciated everyone’s help, but it made me realize just how much I took for granted the freedom of being able to do everything for myself. Each day when I go outside and breathe in the air I like to remember how fortunate I am to be able to go wherever I want.

Beauty: I’m thankful for discovering the power of oils this year. At first the concept of using oils to wash my face and hydrate my body seemed absurd, but after finding the right ones I’m totally hooked. I know these hydrating formulas will help me survive another harsh winter in New York.

Life: I am thankful for my family—the one I have at home in Minnesota and the one I’ve created with friends here in New York. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by so many supportive, loving and generous people!

Beauty: Double-cleansing. I’m someone who really loves washing her face and I don’t even know what I was doing before I discovered this method. It’s completely changed my skin for the better. So I guess I’m also thankful for my Tatcha Cleansing Oil and my Jurlique Purifying Cleanser.

Life: I am thankful for so much it is hard to not be cliche and say everything! However, the family and friends who have supported my move to the city and the community that continues to push me to grow and be more adventurous, and my amazing and innovative school program that continues to shape me. And finally I am thankful for the recovery and health of all my family members and the strength they inspire in me each and every day.

Beauty: Discovering the power of a good mascara! I currently use Josie Maran’s Argan Oil mascara and the impact that it has on my lashes is amazing! Combined with the tips I’ve picked up from Bobbi, on the importance of curl from the base up and making sure I cover every single lash, it’s like I have a whole new set of lashes.

Life: I’m thankful that I’m finally getting in shape! A few months ago, I could barely make it through a cycling class, but I kept at it—even when I felt like my lungs were on fire. Now, I find myself enjoying the challenge, and it’s getting easier over time; regular exercise has really helped me stay energized.

Beauty: I’m thankful to Charlotte Cho for introducing me to Iope’s air cushion compact. She said I’d love it, and she was right. It’s a Korean foundation with SPF 50, but it’s practically weightless—the texture and finish is unlike any other I’ve tried. Best of all, it doesn’t look like makeup. Instead, it gives the appearance of flawless, brilliant skin. I keep telling everyone to try this stuff, because it really is THAT good.

Life: I’m thankful for being back in New York and the love and support that comes with it. Like Joanna (we’re cursed), I broke my ankle. The upside? The outpouring of love from my friends and family, from regular donut deliveries to accompanying me on doctor visits.

Beauty: Philip B. Russian Amber Shampoo. This stuff is really ridiculously expensive, but it’s the only product I’ve ever used that I’d call magic. You can blow-dry your hair without a brush and if you’ve used this, it’ll look like you got a professional blow out. I don’t get it, but I love it.

Life: I’m most thankful for all my beauty comrades here on the team and in my life. There are no complete looks or how to lessons that don’t involve me running it by a faithful beauty buddy.

Beauty: This year I am thankful for the perfect combination of feminine sweet meets masculine sexy in the Chanel Coco Noir parfum. The chic black bottle holds elegance and confidence inside that I never leave home without.

Bobbi Brown, Editor-in-Chief

Life: I am thankful for all the men in my life, especially my husband who is my best friend. My boys keep me grounded and make me laugh. While I miss their baby days, I love watching them grow up and become the amazing men they are.

Beauty: I am so happy to have discovered Virgin Coconut Oil. It is such a great multiple product. It’s an amazing hair mask, body moisturizer, and the solution for dry heels too.

Life: My two nuggets, Elliott and Liv are hilarious, totally full-of-beans and love. I feel so psyched every day to have two people who are thrilled to see me when I walk through the door—greetings involve leaping into my arms. Not sure if they will feel that way when they are teenagers, but for now I am so grateful.

Beauty: I just discovered the Nude Advanced Renewal Serum and I’m hooked. The line has nothing you don’t want (parabens, phthalates) and lots of what you do—omegas, minerals, probiotics, and antioxidants. Put on at night, layered with a rich moisturizer on top and I’m waking up to visibly firmer, smoother skin—something to be thankful for indeed.
