Volunteers in Georgia are giving free hot dogs to Hurricane Irma evacuees

In a shining example of true Southern hospitality, volunteers in southern Georgia are trying to make the experience of fleeing a hurricane just a little less awful.

Fox News reports that a group of volunteers have gathered outside a gas station near an I-75 exit in Valdosta, a town just at the Florida-Georgia line — cooking hot dogs and holding signs announcing “Free food for evacuees.”

“We are having a lot of bottleneck traffic on 75 slowing down. People without food, people without money to buy gas. We just felt like it was our duty as Americans to come out and cook,” Chad Harrison, a volunteer working a grill, told Fox News.

“We have probably fed over 2,000 people on the interstate today,” Harrison said.

Two women, Anny Sanchez and Faith D’aubeterre, who were on vacation in Miami from Venezuela, were very grateful. “We were just passing here, Valdosta, and we just see that you guys were giving food for the people who were evacuating from the … so we come and grab some sandwiches.”

“Thank you so much, you beautiful people!”

While free food is a welcome help, others are doing their part to help evacuees as well. Two nudist resorts in the Tampa area have opened their doors to people fleeing Hurricane Irma.

“We will let anyone in that needs a place,” Paradise Lakes Resort owner Jerry Buchanan said. “We have a full kitchen to feed people and a rather good size generator.”

The resort’s “take off as much as you are comfortable” policy will remain in effect, but there are not too many people walking around right now without clothes, Buchanan said.
