Vacations for One

`Six spectacularly secluded hideaways to help you truly get away from it all.

by Kelly Mickle, Q by Equinox

A little solitude may be good for the soul: While experts have long touted the health benefits of being social, emerging research shows being a loner could be underrated.

Time spent solo can improve feelings of wellbeing, according to a study from the University of Illinois. And ongoing research at Harvard University suggests we form better memories when we’re on our own; and multiple studies show people who spend time by themselves are more creative.

“We’re more free to follow our own chain of thoughts when we’re alone,” says Gregory Feist, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at San Jose State University. “If you’re constantly doing things and being social, there’s little time for reflection, problem solving and creative thinking.”

Whether you’re craving a fresh perspective or just looking for a little peace and quiet, relax and reboot with one of these isolated escapes.
