For many, hair is the ultimate form of expression. And no hairstyle has as much political charge as the afro. The unisex naturally-textured dome is at once radical, sexy, regal and glamorous. It’s a cultural marker that serves as a renunciation of Eurocentric ideals of beauty and anaffirmation of one’s black heritage and identity. In other words, embracing one’s natural assets is being comfortable with who you simply are. Here, we kick off black history month with a look at some of the most memorable afros of the past 50 years.
