The Work-Appropriate Tousled Bun

Those street-style topknots? The ones perched high on your head with plenty of flyaways made famous by women such as Jessica Hart and Nicole Richie have become an easy default style. But when you want to pull your hair off your face and head to the office, you need something more polished. Enter the ever-so-slightly undone bun, like one you might spot on a ballerina postrehearsal. They’re relaxed, practical, and easy to execute (as seen above). To elevate your messy bun to a cool up-do, follow this step-by-step guide with tips from Marissa Martoni of Marie Robinson Salon.

  1. Mist your hair with dry shampoo or texture spray to add grip and tame flyaways.

  2. Comb your hair into a ponytail, securing it tightly at the top of your crown to elongate the neck and play up your cheekbones.

  3. Spray the ponytail with your favorite surf or texture spray, teasing to add volume.

  4. Slowly twist the ponytail into a circle around the elastic until you like the size and shape.

  5. Use as many bobby pins as you need to hold the hair in place, leaving a few strands out of the bun and using your fingers to lightly undo the hair at the nape of your neck. For a cleaner look, use a comb to smooth and pull hair toward the bun, following closely with hairspray, until your strands are tight and in place.
