This Really Works: Natural Hair Products That Deep Clean

I wash my hair daily. I know it’s against every rule in the beauty book, but I’m addicted to that super-clean feeling. Plus, my hair gets greasy really fast (yes, it’s possibly from over-washing). I’ve been told to change up my products and shampooing techniques, but I’ve tried a whole army of products and washed in every imaginable position—head flipped upside down, hair split into sections—to very little effect. So, I didn’t expect a lot when I tried Phylia de M’s hair care routine for the first time. Now, a few weeks later, the all-natural, organic, plant-derived products have seriously shaken up my hair care attitude and given me healthier, shinier, stronger locks, too.

Founded by hair care scientist Dr. Dick Miyayama and his goddaughter Kazu Namise, Phylia de M is the result of years of research into natural hair growth. “My mother was recovering from cancer when she met the Miyayamas, who had a hair care label in Japan,” says Namise. “She started using their products and saw incredible hair regrowth immediately.” After that, Namise began using the products on her own thin, limp strands and says that within a month they became thicker, fuller and more radiant. Amazed, Namise went to work for Miyayama’s company and eventually decided to bring the line stateside.

Phylia de M (the name is a combination of the words “philosophy” and “filial” in a nod to her godfather’s role plus her godmother’s shorthand signature “de M”) with products feature a proprietary blend of aloes, tannic acid, and pure humic-free fulvic acid. The idea is this: hair growth is an essential part of body function. The products renew healthy cells and nerves along the scalp to help the body transform protein into keratin and promote hair growth. “A lot of people know that they want healthy, strong hair,” says Namise. “What they don’t realize is that this is also an important method for drawing heavy metals and toxins out of the body. So by optimizing hair growth, you’re increasing your overall health.”

The ultra-simple line offers only five products: one shampoo, one conditioner, two leave in sprays, and a fulvic acid nutritional supplement. After using the collection for several weeks I can honestly say my hair has never looked better. The shampoo cleans my hair so well that I am now washing every three to four days, and the Connect spray gives it body like a sea salt mist without any of the sticky residue. I’m addicted and I’m definitely not alone. “We have thousands of success stories from people dealing with thinning or hair loss whether it’s due to disease, chemo or genetics,” says Namise. But if, like me, your hair qualms are less medical and more a result of poor product choices, this line will work its magic for you, too.
