Too Chubby, Too Manly, Too Pretty: Successful Women Talk Being Judged for Appearance

Without question, the best Dove commercial to ever exist is the one I appear in (yes, that actually happened). But the beauty brand’s latest output certainly comes in at a close second.

The #MyBeautyMySay campaign features several women who’ve defied various beauty stereotypes to succeed in their individual fields: professional boxing, modeling, blogging, burlesque dancing, and so on. And instead of focusing on selling a certain Dove product, it sells a message: Judging a woman on her appearance alone does nothing but limit her.

“Somewhere along the way, it has become the norm to judge women based on their appearance. Dove created #MyBeautyMySay because we believe a woman’s beauty should not be used to belittle her achievements — instead, her beauty should be celebrated on her terms,” Jennifer Bremner, Dove’s director of marketing, said in a statement. “We want women to challenge this behavior that has unfortunately become commonplace in our society. We are giving all women a platform to speak out and join us to change the conversation.”

In the same release, Dove shares the statistic that “seven out of 10 women want to live in a world where women and girls are judged by what they do and say — and not on their looks alone.” We’d just love to make those other three women watch this new commercial, and hear afterward whether their minds had been changed. I’m not crying … are you crying??
