The Kardashian-Jenner sisters are no strangers when it comes to dyeing their hair, especially youngest sister, Kylie, who’s pretty much dyed her hair every color under the sun. The reality star began her penchant for hair dye at an extremely early age, saying via Twitter that her very first dye job was at only 9 years old. “I begged my mom for a year to dye my hair & finally at 9yrs old, she let me do this and only this! Changed everything.”

With her first dye job being a platinum streak in her dark brown hair, Kylie’s hair-coloring obsession was born, bringing years of varied dye jobs upon us. However, if you’ve ever dyed your hair before, you’ll know how taxing it can be on your strands, leaving you with dry, brittle locks. So how do the Kardashian-Jenners keep their hair so healthy after experimenting with such drastic dye jobs? It turns out, a keratin treatment is the answer!

The Kardashian’s hairstylist, Jen Atkin, has spoken up about using keratin treatments and conditioning products on her celebrity clientele to keep their colored hair healthy, but are these claims worth following ourselves? Fekkai Palm Beach colorist Jodi Julien spoke with Yahoo Beauty to clarify.

“A keratin treatment is a restorative treatment that returns keratin to the hair and seals it into the cortex to repair damage done from frequent coloring,” she says. “Having keratin smoothing treatments two to three times a year will help repair the damage and maintain healthy-looking locks.” Keratin treatments are a good option when it comes to repairing the hair, but for those of us who can’t make it to the salon that often, or are on a budget, you can extend your treatment — and protect your hair — by using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioning masks for healthier locks.
