These WAGs Spend More Time Doing Makeup Than Your Average Reality Star

Most of us tend to have occasions when we wear little to no makeup, times when we pull out all the stops, and shades in between. But how would that change if there were cameras following us everywhere we went? Would we sleep in giant fake lashes? Would we contour on the beach?

Natalie Halcro and Olivia Pierson have a rather unique perspective on the balance between reality and “reality” TV, as co-stars of E!’s WAGS. Of course, the women who call themselves “wives and girlfriends” of professional athletes already operate on a different plane of glamour than the rest of us, but Halcro, girlfriend of NFL linebacker Shaun Phillips, was also a professional makeup artist for eight years, with her cousin Pierson as her assistant. Now they’re running their own beauty and fashion blog, and posting makeup tutorials on YouTube. For the second season of the show (premiering Sunday, June 26, at 10 p.m.), Halcro and Pierson decided to do all their makeup themselves. That’s why Yahoo Beauty asked their advice on the best makeup looks for those reality TV scenarios that we love to watch.

Lunch with frenemies

“I’d like to tell you I wear no makeup when I’m going to lunch with my girlfriends, but on the show, we’re definitely glammed up,” Halcro said.

“With friends, I usually go a little lighter, because I have no one to impress,” Pierson said. “When it’s frenemies, obviously, I like to look nice and dress up, so you have that confident look.”

For a lipstick that will stay in place while alternating between salad and snark, Pierson likes to wear Dose in Stone. “It just stains the crap out of your lips,” she said. “It does not move. When I want to eat or drink or hang out all night, you just apply it once. It’s the best.”

Not-so-relaxing spa treatments

Reality TV stars always manage to look good at places where we normally let ourselves go — the gym, the doctor’s, office, the spas where they receive the hottest new treatments. Halcro and Pierson have a very good reason for being fully made up before getting “ass facials” last season. They go to the spa straight from important business meetings! For those meetings and a subsequent hour of pampering, they’re definitely going to be wearing some lash enhancement.

“When I do do my makeup, when I commit to a full thing, then, yes, I always wear my false lashes,” Halcro said. “I have two different go-to pairs. One’s a little bit more dramatic. One’s a bit played down. My played-down pair is by Mac, number 35. Then my more dramatic pair is by Lilly Lashes, in the style Miami.”

The girls’ luxury getaway

No reality TV season is complete without an awkward group vacation. And just because you’re lying by a pool all day doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still look camera-ready.

“I’d probably just do some SPF tinted moisturizer, some lipstick, lip liner and keep everything all simple,” Pierson said. Halcro agreed, adding, “We both use a tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier. I just do that with a little bit of blush and with a red lip, which is good when you want to do just a little bit of makeup but still look put together. No eye makeup.”

Sports event

If you’re a WAG, or on a show called WAGS, a ball game is never just a ball game. It’s time in a luxury box or courtside, where you can’t look like a typical fan. “Makeup is always full glam,” Pierson said.

“When I usually have been to games, I usually [wear something] sporty casual with sneakers but still have hair and makeup done, with a ball cap or something,” Halcro said. “Every once in a while, I’ll throw on some heels, but you really don’t want to look like an idiot out of place all dolled up.”

Date night with your honey … and cameras

“When you first try to nail a guy, you wear all this makeup, you do your hair, you think it matters,” said Halcro, who’s been in her relationship with Phillips for a few years. “When really, the majority of guys, you get your boyfriend and they’re like, ‘Can you wear a little less makeup?’ ”

While she said in Season 2 we will actually see her lounging around the house in no makeup, she still likes to step things up for a night out once in a while. “My boyfriend is so good: I can go on a date with no makeup on, like maybe a little tinted moisturizer,” she said. “Other days I totally dress up and go to the nines and surprise him and he thinks that’s so fun and appreciates that I took the time to get ready for him too. … I feel like sometimes, when you’re in a relationship, things can get a bit stagnant, so it’s fun for the both of you. It’s fun for me to dress up and feel pretty. It’s fun to feel appreciated by your boyfriend, admired for how you’re looking that night and make a moment of that night, because you usually spend every night together. Usually, you’re on the couch watching TV or whatever.”

Wait, that does sound a lot like reality.
