Would you like to try eating more healthfully without going the whole depriving yourself route? Um, yes. Well, in interesting news of the day, there is now a plate that supposedly sucks up the excess calories from every meal by absorbing the grease (napkin patters, rejoice!).

The invention is the result of a collaboration between the Thai government’s health board and advertising agency BBDO Bangkok, which created the AbsorbPlate in a bid to combat high rate of obesity in Thailand, thanks to all the grease and oil that can be part of a typical diet.

It works a bit like a sponge, allowing grease to settle in 500 tiny holes. Makers say the plates are capable of absorbing about 1.5 teaspoons of of oil from your food, meaning a reduction of 30 calories per plate. Research has shown that blotting a slice of pizza with a napkin can cut about the same amount of calories, and done consistently, could have a impact.

The AbsorbPlate is still in the concept stages so there’s no official launch date yet, but we can’t wait to try this new product.
