The Most Popular Brow Shapes Across the Country

Brow shape frames the face.

Brows make all the difference on your face, and we’ve seen celebrities change their brow shapes and undergo complete facial transformations (see Kylie Jenner and Ariana Grande). Not only do brows frame your face, one MIT study found that they play an integral role in facial recognition — more important than that of the eyes. Still, brow trends come and go with the seasons, so in many cases it takes a team to keep them groomed on trend. Top brow specialists from seven major cities around the US told Mimi what it takes to keep your brows on fleek in each city.

New York: Full, arched, and sculpted brows
In New York, brows are big and all about drama. Think Hilary Rhoda and Keira Knightly. Fekkai brow expert Julianne Valente told Mimi that her clients seek thick brows with a lift. “I shape them to a client’s face and tint them for a fuller look.” Valente recommends dropping the tweezers and trying a volumizing fiber gel to mimic hair.

Los Angeles: Classic, full, and natural
If you envy brows like Jessica Alba and Selena Gomez’s, you’re on the LA beat. Fekkai Makeup artist Elena Drokinahas recommends staying true to the shape of your brows, carefully defining the arch with tweezers and filling in with pencil and powder. “Waxing should be minimal and left to outside corners,” she says.

Miami: Sharply angled and sleek
Miami brow groomers look to Eva Mendes and Angelina Jolie for inspiration. They’re thin, sharp, and defined. Get the look using concealer around the edges for added precision.

Chicago: Full, bushy, and tapering with the eye
In Chicago, the bigger the better when it comes to brows. Think full-on Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins effect. Fekkai brow specialist Elle Glass recommends no tweezing or waxing at all. “The point I always stress is to stop trying to match your brows with each other,” she says. “A lot of it has to do with the bones they sit on. One bone is higher and one is lower, which makes them sisters not twins!” If you’re not blessed with bushy brows, try castor oil or lash extender to promote growth, and fill in with powder and a pencil to fake hairs and tails.

Boston: Straight and flat with minimal arch
Though you might not expect it, flat brows should look soft, not harsh. Think Natalie Portman and Audrey Hepburn. Boston women harness the youthful look by drawing a straight line with a brow pencil then blending and filling in the sparse areas with your usual lighter colored powder.
