Active Ingredients: 5% titanium dioxide, 2.9% zinc oxide While the Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids sunscreens got called out this year for toxic ingredients and misleading SPF labeling from the Environmental Working Group, the Pure & Free Baby Faces sunscreen got a strong rating. The tear-free formula is free of fragrances and dyes and designed to work gently on baby’s skin. The hypoallergenic formula has been approved by the National Eczema Association making it OK for babies with eczema, rashes, or sensitive skin. Another bonus? It stays on for 80-minutes in the water. Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Faces Sunscreen SPF 45 ($11.49)

Active Ingredients: 6% Titanium Dioxide, 3% Zinc Oxide Aveeno is known for their calming hypoallergenic oat-based skincare and they’ve paired their soothing lotion with mineral-based sunscreen ingredients. The hydrating formula stays on for up to 80 minutes in the water and provides clear, broad-spectrum protection. The hypoallergenic formula has been approved by the National Eczema Association making it ideal for babies with eczema, rashes, or sensitive skin. Aveeno Baby Natural Protection SPF 50 ($11)

Active Ingredients: 3% avobenzone, 10% homosalate, 7.5% 0ctinoxate, 5%, octinoxate, 10%octocrylene This air-powered spray comes out almost like water with a completely clear finish. The super lightweight formula paired with the speed of a spray makes it ideal for kids who are sunscreen-averse. While this is the one chemical sunscreen on the list, it is Oxybenzone-free. The paraben-free, phthalate-free formula is designed to stay on for up to 40 minutes of water play. Kiss My Face Kids Defense Air Powered Spray SPF 50 ($11)

Active Ingredients: 11% titanium dioxide, 4% zinc oxide This thick cream is a good choice if you are looking for a high level of mineral protection that won’t budge during active days. It does require a little extra elbow grease to blend the white formula, but it holds up. The one downside? It’s not waterproof. Safe Harbor Mineral Baby & Kids SPF 50 ($7.98)

Active Ingredients: 19% non-nano uncoated zinc oxide If you are concerned about chemicals in sunscreen and getting a high-level of sun protection for your kids, Badger is a fantastic choice (and my favorite of all the sunscreens we tested). The thick cream features 98% organic ingredients and stands up to absolutely everything, including up to 40-minutes of swimming. It does require a little bit of extra effort to rub in, but it’s worth it. Kids will love the tangerine and vanilla scent. Badger Kids Sunscreen Cream SPF 30 ($16)

Active Ingredients: 14% Zinc Oxide, 2% Titanium Oxide Alba makes four different kinds of mineral sunscreens, but the kids version is our favorite for any age. It requires some effort to rub in, but provides a powerful barrier against the sun. The tear-free formula is terrific for water sports, holding up for up to 80 minutes of swimming. Alba Mineral Protection Kids SPF 30 ($11.49)

Active Ingredients: 20% zinc oxide While it’s not designed specifically for kids, the thick, easy-to-blend formula has a very high zinc oxide content making it an excellent barrier against UV rays. It also works with even the most sensitive skin thanks to antioxidant rich marula oil, soothing aloe vera, and anti-inflammatory grape juice extract. Active Ingredients: 12% zinc oxide While there are concerns about kids inhaling sunscreen sprays, if you prefer the convenience of a sunscreen spray, try this non-nano formula from Jessica Alba’s natural line. The broad spectrum sunscreen comes in an air-propelled non-aerosol spray and dries quickly without any odor. It’s free of PABA, phthalates, parabens, and fragrances making it ideal for those with sensitive skin. Honest Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 ($13.95)
