A British teenager who suffered three years of agony after having an ingrown toenail has paid £5,000 (about $6,400) to have her leg amputated.

Hannah Moore, 19, from the town of Stalbridge in Dorset, England, had an ingrown toenail surgically removed in 2012 after months of discomfort, but days after the procedure, she was left in excruciating pain in her right leg, even though there was no sign of infection.

She was subsequently diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which left her in agony 24 hours a day.

Last year, her foot turned black, and a flesh-eating bacteria created a hole in the middle of it. So following years of failed treatments, she made the decision to seek private care, and she paid £5,000 to have her leg amputated in July.

She says she does not regret her decision and hopes to compete in the 2020 Paralympics.

Moore, who is training to be a chef, said, “I couldn’t be happier now that I’ve had my leg amputated. I wasn’t scared, I was excited.

“The past three years have been an absolute nightmare. It’s amazing how much my life changed just because of an ingrown toenail.”

“I’d never heard of CRPS, so when my foot started to swell and hurt, I put it down to an infection,” Moore said. “Over the years, the pain got so bad that I was taking 40 different types of medication, and even a blanket on my leg could leave me in tears.”

Moore said she had to have dressings removed 53 times in 68 weeks under general anesthetic.

“Doctors and specialists warned that having my leg amputated could result in the pain returning in the residual limb, but that was a risk I was prepared to take.”

Because of this issue, National Health Service in England refused to cover her operation, so she paid for it herself with help from her family.

“Thankfully, I’ve been pain-free ever since, and now I’m finally making up for lost time and getting my life back on track.”
