This Sunday, actress Gina Rodriguez will be hosting the Teen Choice Awards along with Josh Peck, and Ludacris. The 31-year-old actress who plays Jane The Virgin on TV will definitely love her red carpet moments this weekend, but she will probably be barefaced leading up to the event. “I’m having so much fun living in this new world of dresses, and awesome hair and makeup and smoky lips, and a bold lip. Once in a while, it is really nice to be able to differentiate,” Rodriguez tells Yahoo Beauty. “I think as women, we step out of the house and there’s a picture, and we’re like, ‘I don’t want to take a selfie because I look…” She pauses for effect, mimicking the inner voice so many women have, before encouraging women to love how they look. “‘No. You look gorgeous. Take a selfie like that, because right here [points to heart] is where the beauty starts.”

The Latina actress is clearly beautiful inside and out. Rodriguez sweetly greeted and sat with guests when we caught up with her at the Crest 3D #GetPolished event in New York City recently. Read on for our chat with the sweet star.

Yahoo Beauty: You are hosting the Teen Choice awards this weekend, are you excited?

Gina Rodriguez: Oh my God, I’m terrifyingly excited. Everybody’s like, “It’s a big deal, it’s a big deal.” I’m like, “No, we’re going to have a fun night.” That’s what I’m trying to have, so that teens feel excited and they walk away with awesome memories. That’s kind of what I want to do. Me, Josh Peck, and Ludacris. I mean, come on! It’s going to be bomb!

Do you have any grooming advice for those guys?

Any I mean, they look pretty good. And men, you guys got it so easy. You don’t need anything.

What are your beauty essentials?

Definitely Crest 3D Brilliance 2 Step because I’m all about smiles. I’m all about natural beauty. When someone smiles, it just invites you in. And that’s the truth. Definitely, if a guy gives me a smile, and it’s a nice one, I’m falling probably, real quick, that’s what I’m saying. But that’s one of my essentials. Another one, Rosebud Salve, I love on my lips, a little bit on my cheeks. And then my third one is my makeup artist, because she makes me look a lot better than I can do to my face.

What kind of tricks has [your makeup artist] taught you?

Eyebrows. Didn’t understand the necessity of eyebrows until Carissa! Because other than that, especially being Latina, and I know Latinas out there can totally agree, there was definitely an era of time where it was like, if you painted out your eyebrows, you’re a chola, you know? Which, I’m not opposed to cholas either, because they be looking fierce. So, it was such a strange transition to where, eyebrows needed to be super thin or they need to be super thick. She taught me how to frame my house.

Did your mom ever give you tips about beauty?

My mom is 60 years old and barely wears makeup at all. I grew up in a household with two older sisters that never wore makeup and still to this day do not wear makeup. I’m definitely the most made up of the family, but because of that foundation, I don’t. And also, as an actor, I also look at pictures of myself without makeup and look at pictures of myself with makeup and see the beauty in both. And be able to separate the idea of here’s when I get glammed, here’s when I go and do an event, when I need to be transformed, and then here’s me, and me is solid and beautiful just the way I am. So, I really thank my siblings and my mom for that, and for their embracing of natural beauty and really finding my own beauty today, I don’t need to add to that to feel beautiful.

What makes you feel beautiful and confident?

You can take anything away from me. I know that my character, before you speak to me, starts with my smile. And I’m going to invite you into my life, and I’m going to, with open arms, meet you and greet you like who I am, because that’s who I am outside of all of this. Just like, Gina, me.

When you have free time what TV shows are you binge watching?

Transparent [and] Orange is the New Black – you know you binge that right away. I’m really excited about the next season of Flash – it’s my brother’s show – because I’ve never done supernatural, and I live in a different kind of fantasyland. It’s really nice to go into their land. It’s pretty cool.

What can we expect the next from Jane the Virgin?

Oh my God, I just got the first episode of season two, and I cannot wait to shoot it! You’re just going to see Jane’s fearlessness. You’re going to see how strong she is. It’s going to be pretty awesome, and I think all the women out there are going to be pretty proud of her and all the decisions she makes. But also, the love triangle is going to continue on. You know, Michael, Raphael, and Jane’s going to get married in Season 2. I don’t know who to! And we’ve got Britney Spears coming on in episode 5 so you’ve got to check it out!

You have an upcoming project with Mark Wahlberg and Kate Hudson. What was it like working with them?

Pretty freakin’ remarkable. It was totally badass. I just wrapped on Friday, this past Friday, in New Orleans. I had quite the transforming three months there. A lot of different things, not only the movie because the movie was awesome. The action was super different from Jane; it was a different way to live. But a lot of things changed in my life, and I really embrace change. I’m really about that.
