What’s the difference between Taylor’s Schilling’s makeup routine on Orange is the New Black and off-screen in her regular life? It turns out it’s just a little concealer. We caught up with the star to chat about her low-key beauty regimen, what to expect on season three (watch on Netflix now!), and which inmate looks the best in prison, and Piper Chapman’s commissary wish list.

Joanna Douglas: On OITNB do you really go without makeup?

Taylor Schilling: So, it’s either no makeup or we are exaggerating circles under my eyes, but the truth is we usually don’t have to do that. There is no dark circle enhancement necessary.

Ha! What do the makeup artists use to make you look bad?

I don’t know. Those are like the magic makeup artist’s tricks – I feel like those are more like face paint they end up using. They have all these little pots of stage makeup that they pull out and give people zits, wrinkles, and dark circles.

What do stylists do to your hair?

The stylists will do a really simple blow dry to keep it full for the day of shooting and to keep my texture.

Name three things you wish they sold in commissary.

Music, phones, and fresh vegetables.

Which character has really got her prison beauty routine down to a science?

Lorna Morello, for sure.

Your character quickly became confident on the show during rough circumstances. Would you say you’re pretty confident in real life?

I think I’ve definitely developed my confidence. I don’t think I came to the table with a whole lot of confidence, but I work on it and I think it’s more of a learned skill over time. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten much more confident and accepting.

Is there anything different we should look out for this season?

I think it’s a little bit lighter… people start to have more fun.

As someone who was thrown into the spotlight from this show, do you feel more pressure now to look a certain way or follow trends?

Not really. It’s pretty important to me to stay true to myself. That’s always been a part of what I’m interested in. So it hasn’t really been a shift, but there’s certainly more access to things now.

What is your go-to beauty look off camera?

Simple. I’ll put on a little sunscreen and some concealer and maybe some blush. For my hair I use the Luxurious Volume 7 Day In-Shower Treatment by John Frieda ($9) to keep my hair full. My stylist Harry Josh turned me on to it. It’s easy to use and my hair stays full for a week.

What about for big events and red carpet?

I usually decide to go classic – like eyes or lips. Once I decide which one I’m going to go with, I kind of go from there.

How do you take care of your skin?

Washing it. Making sure it’s clean, and using sunscreen and Retin-A.

Is there anything special you eat or drink to look great from the inside out?

I just try to eat regularly and healthfully. Whatever I feel like I need or want.
