The Street Style at Curlfest Gives Us Major Hair Goals

Women, men, and children rocking curls, braids, Afros, buzz cuts, and many other different hairstyles flocked to Prospect Park in Brooklyn on Saturday to attend Curlfest, an annual festival where natural beauty is celebrated.

Now in it’s fourth year, Curlfest has grown into one of summer’s must-attend events, where major brands like SheaMoisture, Iman Cosmetics, and Palmer’s give out free beauty swag and demo tutorials on the latest hair and makeup trends.

According to Simone Mair, co-founder of Curly Girl Collective — which hosts Curlfest — today’s political and social climate makes events like this even more important. It provides a safe space and environment of inclusion for many who often feel excluded.

“I think we are here to encourage anybody who feels left out of the beauty conversation to come and get a big ol’ hug from us,” Curly Girl Collective co-founder Tracey Coleman tells Yahoo Beauty. “It doesn’t matter what your hair is — it’s who you are inside. Whether you’re wearing cornrows, no hair, blue hair, or straight hair, you’re welcome here. We’re trying to change the conversation of what beautiful looks like.”
