Pink makeup, particularly around the eyes, can be daunting, but Sophia Bush proved that the only way to tackle this trend is head on. The 34-year-old actress appeared at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards wearing a fuchsia eye to match her dress, and she rocked it.

“I know that it was probably scary for her, but I thought that if anyone could pull it off, it would be her,” Bush’s go-to makeup artist, Patrick Ta, told Allure. “You have to do this look with intention. You need to use a bold, saturated shade of pink, otherwise you’re going to look like your eyes are irritated.”

Using matte-pink blush along the creases of the eyes (Ta mixed Chanel Powder Blushes in Vibration and Rouge Profond), Ta created a vibrant color across the upper lids and lower lash lines. He added Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Sensuelle on the upper lids to make the color stick and pop. Buffing the lipstick with more eyeshadow, Ta made sure not to go above the crease, since the pigmented hue would be too aggressive on the brow bone.

He then added dimension to the eye with a deep purple shadow on the outer corners and along the bottom and top lashes, completing the look with inky-black mascara.

To keep the skin looking natural, Ta enlisted La Mer’s dewy foundation mixed with a few drops of oil. “Because the eye is so intense, I wanted to keep the skin as fresh and natural as possible,” Ta added, saying that it’s important to see the texture of the skin with a bold eye look. A sheer, monochrome lip tied the look together. “I wanted to find a lipstick that was the same color but sheer, so the eyes could be the star of the show.”
