The secret to perfectly French style and beauty is sticking to a uniform. Sounds boring, but Soko proves that it’s anything but with her signature smudgy red eyeshadow. The musician and actress has that enviably cool je ne sais quoi, but with way more edge. If you’ve long lusted after the French mystique, finding a go-to formula for everything that goes on your face and body is the answer to what seemed like an impossible equation.

The pursuit of cool isn’t as hard as you think, though. Soko’s signature look takes mere seconds to achieve. She preps her skin with Chanel Perfection Lumiére Velvet foundation to start with a matte, blank slate that lets her eye makeup take center stage. The effortlessly cool eyeshadow look truly takes next to no effort. Using a Mac lip pencil in Brick, Soko pencils heavy lines all around her eyes up to the crease, and smudges them in with her fingers. And voila! Her hair seems to be equally easy, with the help of a little oil for an extra dose of “I don’t care.”

The toughest part of achieving that cool French thing is finding which signature look is the most authentic to you. Soko’s red eyes were inspired by the 1982 film, Ladies and Gentleman, The Fabulous Stains, starring Diane Lane as a rebel rockstar with some major ‘80s hair metal beauty looks. Maybe the most original look is all about getting into character.
