Road-trip beauty has a lot to live up to. For advice on the subject, VIOLET GREY consulted regular road trippers (and husband and wife) makeup artist Kate Lee and hairstylist and Sascha Breuer. HEAVY DUTY HAIR TOOLS
Breuer favors Y.S. Park’s teasing comb for its versatility. “You can section off tresses and also use it to tease hair to create a little volume, even when it’s not freshly washed.” Also required: a good hair brush. He compares Braun’s Satin Hair Iontec Brush to a magic wand. “It removes static and flyaways, but also gives hair incredible shine and softness when you brush it.” Translation: no need to pack extraneous serums, sprays, or creams.

BEACH DAY ANY DAY
Multitasking is especially important when you hit the road (the trunk only fits so much). This beach spray is one of Breuer’s go-to’s for its versatility. Used as a root spray before blow-drying it creates light, airy volume; as a second-day refresher, it absorbs any natural oils; and sprayed on toweled hair and left to dry it gives a relaxed beach texture, even if you’re in the desert.

Banish the ill effects of a hot, dusty day in the car with this orange-, rosemary-, and mint-infused facial mist. Lee keeps one handy on the road or in the air: ”It’s so refreshing and makes my tired skin feel vibrant again,” she says.

TAKE IT OFF
Makeup should always come off, even if your road trip takes the form of camping in the wilderness. “I like to gently remove my mascara before I wash my face in order to give the delicate eye area the respect it deserves,” says Lee. This remover certainly does the job, taking off even waterproof mascara while soothing the area with water cornflower and water rose extracts. Lee recommends siphoning product into small pots and bottles from Muji for easy transportation.

TRANSFORMING CLEANSER
Once stubborn eye makeup is off, cleanse with this three-phase cream to rid yourself of the day’s grime. Says Lee, “When you first apply it, it feels like a gel cream; then it turns into an oil; and, finally, when you add water it turns to a milk that just washes away with no residue. Magic.”

PROTECTIVE BASE
If it hasn’t been drummed into your beauty brain by now, let’s refresh: Wear sunscreen. Every day. Especially when you’re in the car all day, as the windows won’t block those harmful rays. Lee recommends Chanel’s purse-appropriate SPF for all occasions. “It’s a great base for makeup because it doesn’t leave a white greasy residue,” she notes.

LOW KEY PRIMER
Badly lit motel bathrooms and early morning sunset hikes mean makeup should be easy (and take no less than five minutes). Lee waxes lyrical about this glow-giving primer, especially you need a quick fix. “I use this mixed with my Kanebo Sensai Bronzing Gel and it creates a little glow, which brings attention to my cheekbones and jawline. Even if you’ve packed light, Lee insists, “Every girl needs a red lip for a road trip!” She preps lips with Eve Lom’s Kiss Mix (“so soothing and a really great texture”) before applying the velvet matte Chanel lipstick in her current favorite—this soft rosy red.
