Yesterday marked one of the most dramatic days for music lovers since the breakup of One Direction (which we're still not over). At the stroke of midnight, Fifth Harmony announced that Camila Cabello had left the band, tweeting a statement that said they had been informed of this decision "by her representatives." Ally, Dinah, Lauren, and Normani later shared a second statement in which they claimed she had repeatedly spurned attempts to talk to them about her plans.

Camila, in turn, responded with her own letter, saying she was "shocked to read the statement the fifth harmony posted without my knowing," and that "the girls were aware of my feelings through the long, much-needed conversations about the future that we had during tour." She indicated that she was grateful for the time that she spent in the group, as well as the support of her fans, and wished the other girls well. She also confirmed that she will be embarking on a solo career.

In spite of clearly laying out her reasons for leaving and her right to independence, people have been giving Camila loads of hate on social media, comparing her to other "backstabbers" like Zayn Malik of One Direction and Geri Halliwell of The Spice Girls.

But she's got the support of at least one person: her BFF and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" collaborator Shawn Mendes, who paraphrased and praised a line from her letter in a heartwarming tweet.

He, in turn, got a lot of hate for his support.

But that's OK because being there for your buddy when the haters are trying to drag you both down is true friendship.
