It used to be dressing for the red carpet meant high-maintenance makeup and hair. However, the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards is proof that looking gorgeous doesn’t have to be all about blowouts and uptight updos. The cool-girl take on the red carpet is about long, wavy, totally undone hair.

Model and Taylor Swift bestie Karlie Kloss walked the red carpet with Swift’s #girlgang with her hair down perfectly framing her face. Emily Ratajkowski’s slightly tousled locks and middle part is the cool-girl take on red carpet hair and Selena Gomez kept her shiny locks in loose, big curls.

Tori Kelly brought the house down with her amazing VMA vocals while leaving her curls loose and wild. “Tori was blessed with lots of beautiful naturally curly hair — when you have curly hair, the most important thing is to keep it healthy and use products that support the natural texture,” says stylist Nikki Providence, who worked on Kelly’s look using Matrix StyleLink Products. Model Cara Delevingne went with a deep side part and side-swept long locks. Actress Laura Marano looked stunning with long cascading waves.
