Red Lips Hit the Red Carpet at the 2015 SAG Awards

The no-makeup makeup look is the biggest trend for 2015, and flattering nudes are certainly wearable for everyone—especially celebrities with flawless skin. But when tuning into an award show there’s perhaps nothing more boring than seeing another pale lip or bronzy contouring. So we applaud these five leading ladies for the oldest (and perhaps easiest) attention-grabbing trick in the book: a swipe of red lipstick. It elevated these stars to some of the best looks at the SAG Awards.

Does anyone rock a red lip better than Emma Stone? It turns out her makeup was inspired by Helmut Newton photos from the ‘70s with a French twist. “We made Emma’s lips a powerful, graphic statement—her red lip was the only color,” says makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. “She used Revlon ColorStay Lip Liner in Red ($9) and Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick in HD Gladiolus ($8). The effect wasn’t glossy, but wasn’t matte—it had a creamy, luxe feeling.”

Lupita Nyong’o went the glossy route, with makeup artist Nick Barose applying a trifecta of products. For the base he used Kiehl’s Scented Lip Balm #1 in Cranberry ($9). He outlined with Lancome Le Crayon Lip in Garnet ($25) and topped with Lancome L’Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Caprice ($30).

Rosamund Pike also let her lips do the talking. “I wanted her makeup to remain neutral with a pop of color on the lip,” says makeup artist Melanie Inglessis. “I used MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil #25C Orange Red ($19) to line the lips and filled in with Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Pétillante" ($35).

With her closely cropped ‘do, Maggie Gyllenhaal played up her lips with a shade on the pink side of red.
And Sofia Vergara, who often rocks nude glossy lips, matched her brick red pucker to her red dress—a showstopping look on the red carpet.
