Real Girl Food Diaries: A Day in the Life of Fashion Editors

By Alina Gonzalez

We don’t know about you, but we’re endlessly fascinated by what other people eat (call us food voyeurs). Partly because we’re foodies at heart and partly because we’re always looking for inspiration for our own meals, we asked our colleagues at Who What Wear to record a typical food day in the life of a fashion editor. You might assume that fashion editors would be nibbling grazers, concerned about fitting into their next outfit, but the editors at Who What Wear love nachos as much as the next girl. In fact, we wouldn’t mind a bite of everything they ate and kindly photographed for us. (And we’ve got some amateur food stylists and photographers in the building, if we do say so ourselves). Keep scrolling for three real-life food diaries from the fashion editors at Who What Wear!

8:30 a.m. - In the words of Anthony Bourdain, “I’m a total egg slut.” For me, a truly satisfying breakfast includes eggs, so I try to find time a couple mornings a week to cook them. My current favorite preparation is to fry an egg with a generous amount of sharp cheddar cheese sprinkled on top, put it on top of a slice of toast or English muffin, and then spoon salsa on top. When I have an avocado on hand, I make a side of avocado toast. I start with a thin base layer of Laughing Cow spreadable cheese, layer on the avocado, and finish with a sprinkle of chili flakes, salt, and lemon pepper. Though this breakfast may seem a bit elaborate for a rushed weekday morning, I swear it only takes about five minutes more than my regular cereal and milk!

12:30 p.m. - I have a lunch meeting at Real Food Daily, a local vegan spot beloved by Beyoncé and most of the Clique Inc. staff. I like eating there, because it forces me to eat healthfully, which is definitely not always the case. I opted for my usual: the Mediterranean Bowl, a delicious combination of arugula, tomato, avocado, cucumber, kalamata olive salsa, white bean basil salad, quinoa tabouli, almond feta, and flatbread. Confession: I ate all the flatbread and not all the arugula.

4:00 p.m. - I swing by the kitchen for a few handfuls of trail mix to hold
me until dinner. There’s always something in the Clique Inc. kitchen to eat, which translates to frequent snacking.

8:00 p.m. - I met up with a few PR contacts for appetizers and drinks at Eveleigh. This is probably the opposite of a balanced dinner, but the most appealing things on the menu were the asparagus with an egg on top (I know, again with the eggs), fries with truffle aioli (because, duh), and a dirty martini.

9 a.m. - I’m not really into breakfast, which is thanks to a combination of not being hungry and not wanting to wake up any earlier than I have to. I always start off with a coffee, or two. Today I went to Alfred Coffee & Kitchen, the best but busiest coffee shop in L.A. (trade-offs), and got cold brew with almond milk.

10:30 a.m. - Changed my mind about the breakfast thing—something made me think of an acai bowl from Liquid Juice Bar and I just had to have one. I got the maca bowl with no blueberries. It is SO good. Ate 95 percent of it before getting extremely full.

2 p.m. - In an effort to be healthy, and still feeling a full from the acai bowl, I opted for a lighter, simpler lunch than usual: shrimp spring rolls from Erewhon supermarket, near our office. The rolls are made with thin rice paper (I think?) and have lettuce, cucumber, avocado, and shrimp inside. Erewhon is the most amazing supermarket I’ve ever been to, and all their ready-made foods taste fresh and restaurant quality. Of course, I had another iced coffee with a bit of almond milk.

8 p.m. - For dinner, I had chicken tacos from Fresh Corn Grill, without the tortillas. They have grilled chicken breast, guacamole, and chopped lettuce and cabbage inside, and come with green salsa and pico de gallo. They also come with an option of one side or two, I chose two: red cabbage slaw and grilled asparagus. This is one of my favorite meals—it’s so filling and flavorful. They also use really fresh ingredients (as the name implies), and you can taste it in the food.

10 p.m. - Met a friend for drinks and had a glass (or two) of Sauvignon Blanc. Not the healthiest choice (that would be tequila with sparkling water, my other go-to), but it was still about 70 degrees out, so white wine felt appropriate. Also ate probably about 10 mixed olives. Who can resist?

9:30 a.m. - I met two of my favorite PR girls from Tularosa at Kings Road Cafe for a quick breakfast meeting. I drank a nonfat latte while the girls filled me in on upcoming plans for their brand. When it came time to order, I was torn between the breakfast burrito and spinach and goat cheese omelet. I went with the lighter and option and saved the burrito time for the weekend.

12:30 p.m. - I ordered my go-to meal from Joan’s on Third, which is a Chinese chicken salad and an iced coffee. I’m an extremely slow eater, so I usually munch on this for a good two hours while I sip on my second coffee of the day.

4:30 p.m. - Around this time, I usually find myself reaching into my massive candy jar (which I inherited from an old co-worker). Right now, it’s looking pretty bare, but I dug around and found a couple of sour candies to snack on.

7:30 p.m. - I met a friend at Petty Cash for a quick bite and margs. The atmosphere is great and the menu is prefect for sharing. We ordered chips and guacamole, roasted cauliflower nachos, and three mini tacos each. We absolutely over-ordered, but we’re so intrigued by the selection, we couldn’t help ourselves. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d say the Al Pastor taco is a must order!
